>There is one thing not to do, and that is simply to drift along with the daily routine, making no extra effort. You will soon find yourself middle-aged, having done nothing more than routine jobs, and being little farther along than you were years ago. The extra effort is the difference between the great mass of mediocre artists and the comparatively small group of very good ones.>And in Art, study can never stop. You will find sketches galore in the studio of the good man, with the paint quite fresh. The mediocre artist's sketches are old and dusty.>I have seen so many middle-aged artists still hoping, whose samples are frayed at the edges, and thumb-marked with time. Sometimes it has been a matter of years since they sat down and actually did something to give their hopes any promise. They are plodding their lives away at something they hate, and doing nothing about it. These are the men who never seem to have had a chance. The truth is, they never seized a chance.- Andrew Loomis, Creative Illustration/Studies/ General is all about improving your art and never settling for mediocrity. >>7169509Then there must be some misunderstanding here - I try to do memory copies more than a week later after I originally copied it, I have not previously “shown my work” before this, but I can show you the exact plates that I’m trying to reproduce from memory, and wherever I can’t (which is often), I am trying my damndest to substitute in some type of remotely close set of shapes that I can muster up that will still represent that I had learned something from copying said plate in the first place.Top left is a pair of legs I tried to style after doing a Norakura copy, Top right is a Loomis head with part of Mustang's outfit from FMA, Bottom left was me trying to roughly capture the shape of a Taco head + adding hair to it which I've also copied from Paryi (though hair has not come very naturally to me so I don't remember much from the copies I did of him weeks ago, as I've also gone back to grinding just pure anatomy again)All memory copies / best memory reproductions I've done here were done more than 24 hours after the original plates were copied.

I have to spend hours to make something look like it was perhaps a quick sketch. Maybe I have to look into timed poses.>>7169485>>7169761>>7169153I guess my 2 cents to add onto the other anon would be to forgo the memory drawing part and only focus getting an exact copy at first.Learning anatomy (Bridgeman, Hampton, etc.) will do you no good because you still would have to recall the exact proportions of a muscle or simplified shape you would want to implement. Currently the fundamental that would benefit you the most is proportion or accuracy.I believe that the best way to practice this would be to find lineart artwork (not a real life picture) and try to copy that. Like the Igor Stravinsky exercise except you don't have to turn the image upside down and you can find something that appeals to you.Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.

Is there an art course or book that shows how to shade like the GOATS but in digital? When I use fountain pens and map pens on paper, it's not hard. When I try to do it in digital I don't know what the fuck to do to get same results. In fact, mangaka who do digital art have dogshit shading.

You can buy these from any Online art supply shop that sells japanese stationary although they are going to be expensive since most Manga artists just use digital tools for the same purpose. Does anybody know what type of brush @B_OX_MOD1 uses or a similar feel? i know there is some kind of random jitter and opacity but I'm just confused.i noticed that this artist has extremely fast output and i'm curious if it's because of his brush,I'm always fighting with my sketches to make them look good and move to a good line, I'd appreciate any suggestions,(My art below)

Are there any books for beginners on how to draw in the classical academic way? I like how the French and Italian masters of the past drew band sculpted the heroes of ancient Greece and Rome and I also like Frank Franzetta's style, which is quite similar, so can you recommend books based on that as wellI love beauty and lifeful dramatic scenes
>>7169101NO AND THEN
>>7169357This a perfect example of how people who don't know anything just cobble together a bunch of memes they've heard parroted elsewhere.>Solomon J. Solomon's book on Oil Painting is in-fucking-valuable. First class, and picks up from where Bargue more or less leaves off.Solomon J. Solomon's approach to drawing is literally diametrically opposed to the Bargue approach. SJS recommends you do a contour drawing (literally just copying the outline of an object through observation) and then use that first piece you put down as a comparative measurement for the rest of the drawing, checking things like horizontal and vertical alignments to keep everything proportional.Whereas with the Bargue method you start with a simplified block in, focusing on the largest shapes first completely ignoring the contour until the last stage.>SJS is English, but he was trained by the french academic system. There was never such a thing as the "french academic system". There were tons of private ateliers which each had a different approaches and mostly provided personalized instruction rather than some sort of generalized study plan. Things like Bargue (but also the Julien system) are a later development and not characteristic of the french atelier scene of that time. And to the OP, you will never be able to paint like that. You're literally competing with people that had private instruction from the age of 15 by experienced artists in a time, place and culture where that particular way of drawing and painting was highly developed. If you're at the "how do I draw, better ask /ic/" stage you've already lost. It's like asking "how do I become Mike Tyson" on /fit/. You having to ask that in the first place means you're not on a life path where you're even close to capable of achieving that goal.
>>7168085I could swear there's a book specifically about the classical drawing method, like that particular look to the heads, but no one has mentioned it here.Though I don't remember what it is either, so fat lot of help I am.
>>7169822>Solomon J. Solomon's approach to drawing is literally diametrically opposed to the Bargue approach. SJS recommends you do a contour drawing (literally just copying the outline of an object through observation)Not him;he indeed seems to argue against **rushed** block-ins, but:> I looked at the cast, my eyes almost closed, and then drew the space, under A, lying between the neck and the jaw, a little island of black, treating the shape of it as I would a freehand drawing.> https://archive.org/details/practiceoilpain00sologoog/page/n29/mode/2upMeaning, he identifies shadow shapes, and refine from there. While Bargue plates are commonly presented with a not-so-rushed block-in, we don't know for sure whether the student was expected to draw them before proceeding: that's the common modern interpretation, but we could argue that it's not the author's intention. For example, consider the unfinished arm of picrel, drawn by a student working at Gérôme's atelier: the state of this arm is basically a simple light-shadow dichotomy, as exemplified by almost all the simple Bargue plates. More refined plates build from this dichotomy and add details.Image from https://ramonhurtado.com/19cdatabase>There was never such a thing as the "french academic system".Indeed in the usual sense. But there was, and still is, an academy originally established by a king, originally meant to encourage a certain degree of technical excellence.Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.

Do you practice urban sketching regularly? Practicing urban sketching is the only thing that gets me out of the house, and it has been essential for me to improve my freehand drawing and observation. I usually only carry 3 fine line pens and a sketchbook, but I'm thinking of getting some watercolors. I usually go to squares that aren't very busy, as I still have difficulty dealing with crowded environments. It's a very positive and therapeutic activity. I used to be very depressed, but when I'm in crisis I always take my materials and go out to draw, regardless of the time of day. I don't think about making beautiful or perfect drawings, I just let the stream of consciousness flow and capture the essence

A lot of non-photographers don’t realize how much professionals design the lighting, pick costumes, perspective, travel, make camera/lens choices, etc. Then there’s photo editing which has been done since the 19th century. It's part of why drawing copies of photographs is seen as unskilled. Because the photographer has made all of the artistic decisions already.
