[Catalog] [Archive]

/cgl/ is a board for the following:

• Cosplay
• Lolita
• J-fashion
• Conventions & gatherings
• Sewing & prop-making
• Craftsmanship tools/materials & tutorials
• LARPing
• Discussing accessories such as wigs/circle lenses/prosthetics/makeup (These must be within the context of the board-related topics listed above; weight loss threads should be kept in /fit/, beauty and fashion generals should be kept in /fa/)

Our board rules are simple:

• Thread content must be related to one of the categories covered in the list above. Off-topic threads and replies will be deleted.
• Singling people out maliciously is not tolerated and will result in a ban. 4chan is not your personal army. The singling out rule applies to vendetta threads and replies being made to attack a specific person, as well as predatory behavior like doxing. Discussing an individual in general isn't against the rules as long as it's done within context of cosplay/lolita/j-fashion.

Does anyone recall a video of 3 women with big breasts cosplaying as poison ivy, suicide squad harley quinn and original harley quinn? it was a comedy video uploaded to youtube around 2016-2017 and it centered around mocking fanfiction. I'm almost certain its title was "fanfiction theatre"

I fucked up the title of the last thread and put Anime Weekend Atlanta.

Anyone going to Momocon? Dates are Friday, May 24th through Monday, May 27th at the Georgia World Congress Center. Have any cosplay plans? Doing any interesting panels? Selling anything?

I gotta do the wiring on this helmet when I get back from work. But after fixing the eyes and doing the antenna, it ain’t looking too bad.

Social media, idk if Facebook groups are the way to go or Instagram is for that but if you’re new to cosplay, you could probably get a random free lancer who has decent equipment to shoot your stuff. I’m an iPhone shitter, good angles , decent location and a good source of light matter more than equipment imho.

Something done from up here in Ohio a few months back on iPhone. If you’re insistent on a pro photog though, just find a random hallway dude. I know a few east coasters from like the Katsu-ish region go. Decent time to network anon.

Wish you luck anon, but from what I've seen recently cosplay photographers' pricing is getting ridiculous. $150-250 is bad, but then saying that you can only choose 5 photos to keep is just stupid. I constantly offer to photoshoot friends for free or maybe for lunch/dinner because I don't want them throwing money in a hole.

>I’m an iPhone shitter, good angles , decent location and a good source of light matter more than equipment imho.
This. I know someone who spent serious money on all the fancy toys last year and is trying to ask for at least $100/hr now. Buying the equipment doesn't make you automatically make you a professional. Pic related I took last year because I thought it was cool.

Anyone know if Pokemon card trading is a thing at this convention? I have a bunch of random duplicate promos, EXs, Vs, VMAXd, trainers, etc. that I'm looking to trade. Not really interested in selling, I just like trading. Is that a thing?

true but i pass well enough.
Enough to confuse a guy who tried to hit on me. His face got so fucking red lmao
>>10912652
Not yet, but i keep getting told that i will (in good spirit) from strangers and i mean village yokel country is all around me.
There's this feeling that i shouldn't be surpised if it leads to violence.
>>10912656
true but where i live women are also chiseled, moreso than in neighbouring countries.
I've lost "friends" over this, though mostly even the straight up neo-nazi far right guys i know don't care cause i've been able to dig up my niche of "local artist" which just lets me get away with so much so long as the social distinction is maintained, sometimes it does suck being othered but i love being able to do and say anything and have someone listen and see.

Also friends telling me i should crossdress for fiume or even venice carneval, not a bad idea, beyond that to get there i have to go through the mountains (inhabited by the worst kind of village idiots) and i don't think the female friend is parsing that i can't just go through there dressed like that.
>>
>>10912699
People dont care about passing or at the very least semi-attractive looking cross dressers and trannies. Thats literally his point.

Religion and the patriarchy pretty much wont allow men to be anything more than creatively and emotionally retarded drones for the most part.

They also dont like what women are doing but unlike men, women as a whole actually have each others backs and have fought back from men trying to control and shame their actions.
>>
>>10912706
nayrt, but pretty much this. Women in the west fought for the right to be able to wear trousers. There is no widespread successful equivalent of men fighting for the right to wear dresses/skirts in the west. For women trousers were a garment that made it safer to do all kinds of jobs, so it was a case of practicality and increased freedom. Most men don't want to wear dresses/skirts just for the aesthetics alone, and in most cases dresses and skirts aren't as practical as trousers. The only times I hear about men wanting to wear skirts is when companies/schools require men to wear long trousers during hot weather. So without the excuse of practicality men generally don't have any reasons other than aesthetics to wear skirts/dresses. Men wanting to wear dresses/skirts because they like what they look like is considered a bad thing because of patriarchal values. If a guy wants to win the fight for the right to wear dresses/skirts he will have to find other men to join his cause otherwise it will never happen.
The enemy isn't women, it's anyone who cares about preserving traditional values.

you make it sound like i am refering to casual crossdressing, like wearing a skirt to work, which is against thread rules (!!!)

No but i mean strictly in the costume sense, women can get away with way weirder shit than men.
Don't get how traditional values play into something where the point is artistic expression. Granted most woman costumes are just being half naked with a vague theme.
>>10912706
yeah i guess...
still sucks man i feel like i have to carry a knife every time just to be safe.
>>
>>10912719
I was explaining why you may encounter prejudice when crossplaying. That's not against thread rules, I'm not giving you advice on how to cross dress in general.
You can't separate cosplay from general society because people into cosplay and people who attend conventions are also people who are out and about in society. So someone who has a lot of issues with seeing men crossdressing in general is also going to have a problem with men crossplaying unless you make it clear it's obviously a gag (like man faye or an obese bearded guy wearing a sailor moon costume). If you approach crossplay with any level of seriousness and effort/craft these guys will have a problem with you. For your sake I hope you don't encounter them.

"women can get away with way weirder shit than men" it has already been explained by several anons why this is. It's because of general norms related to which garments which sex is allowed to wear, women aren't automatically assumed to be a threat/sex pest. Women crossplaying aren't given special treatment/leeway over men just because they're female. Men crossplaying are just judged more harshly because of patriarchal beliefs and because men crossdressing in general is considered perverted. The few bad apples that sexually harass people and/or flash people whilst crossdressing/crossplaying just strengthens those views.
You passing enough, to the level that some guy actually thought you were a woman first, actually does not work in your favor regarding your safety. We know some guys get violent if they think you're a woman and they try to hit on you and then they discover you're a guy.

Thread for good cosplays that are suggestive but still for a blue board (no nudity)

Truly ass that ACEN doesn't offer cheaper DH-only passes like some other cons are doing. I remember getting glomped in the early aughts and not caring about it because I was desperate for any female contact, still doesn't make glomping in general a good idea. (My 17-year-old Ryoga cosplaying ass was so disappointed to find out she was only 15.)

Really hard to do the free hugs thing without looking creepy unless you're adorable/completely non-threatening or a Spirit Walker-level weird abomination.

>Really hard to do the free hugs thing without looking creepy
As a woman, I definitely find any adult male with one of those signs to be creepy as hell. Especially now since so many predators have been exposed in the Midwest scene over the past 5 or so years. The signs just feel a bit like a red flag. If the person looks like a minor, then I just find it cringe, but in an awkward teen kind of way. Either way those signs are not a good look in 2024. It’s time to let that trend die out

How do people find cosplay photographers at cons? I'm cosplaying for the first time in years and deciding to go all out with everything (commissioning someone to make part of the costume, weight loss, practicing makeup until I'm happy with the results, etc.)

I really want to get good photos of the costume when it's all done, but I have no idea how to go about it.
>>
I have been 20-30 lbs overweight my entire life, but I have a lot of natural muscle mass and the frame to support it. No one has ever shown me how to start going to the gym or pushed me to get in shape and I don't know where to start.

How do I start? Or how did YOU start? I have all the other skills to start doing really great cosplays but I'm a fat, lazy fuck barely motivated to get up and go to work.
>>
>>10912461
In my experience, they usually find photographers before cons on social media and book a time slot with them. You might get lucky prowling a con for a person holding a camera and offer to pay them for their time, but you can't guarantee quality or even a return investment honestly.
>>
>>10912474
Go to fit, read the sticky. Learn how to count calories. And start using YouTube to build your beginner routine.
If you have no drive you are fucked. Weight loss takes drive and motivation. If you have neither then just be a fat fuck the rest of your life.
>>
>>10911890
Right I'm new as fuck to this board so be gentle here. I'm planning on cosplaying Gadem from Mobile Suit Gundam for a con this July.
>pic related
I already have someone working on the cape since they offered but the rest is very much up in the air. I have a rough template for the helmet being cooked up, but with the uniform I'm torn on trying to go for military surplus or try to make a basic pair of matching green pants and a jacket, since I doubt I could find surplus in a green that looks right, let alone that both match. I also don't know how I'd go about doing the collar, since there's a decent bit of detail there. Note I have a old sewing machine but I've never used it. Also I saw a lot of guides and recommendations for wigs but is there anything similar for facial hair?

Any tips to try and achieve all this would be very much welcome, thanks.

After dwelling on it, I can say, yes, complacence is part of why I'm not enjoying cons as much. Stuff that seems normal today would have been insane when I first started attending, and stuff that seemed insane at the time would be "Eh" at best now. Will that improve my experiences going forward? Dunno. But at least I feel more grateful, and plan to be on the look out for new ways of spicing things up

Fan Expo doesn't focus on anime related stuff. That's not to say there isn't anything of interest to anime fans, but it's way more focused on superhero comic type stuff. It's a "multi-genre" convention, which is different from anime based conventions like the ones you named.

The fact that they havent already reflects badly on them. Its just exploiting new people interested in the fashion and making it harder for people to get good deals elsewhere since scalpers buy them up instantly to resell.
>>
>>10912685
Wouldn't the scalpers still buy up all the good deals and just resell them elsewhere?
>>
>>10912686
It’s be far less profitable and harder to sell, lacemarket is easily the biggest western platform, doesn’t take any fees, uses PayPal which has more reliable seller protection, and has far less flakes/difficulty to use than something like Facebook marketplace. Chinese/Japanese/Korean girls all have their own sites and groups where they can buy pieces they want for cheaper, other than a few coveted OTT sweet pieces rich Chinese lolitas would pay scalped prices for I don’t think many of them buy on lacemarket. Better they get banned, though mods don’t give a fuck because their previous (?) mod was already a notorious scalper.
>>
>>10912696
i can't remember the last time i ordered anything from lacemarket. it's practically unusable at this point.
