Use them in my Olympus om1 it’s part of getting that look from that era.
Using my modern Nikon primes on the f100 produces something that looks halfway between film and digital.
I much prefer film with these older style lenses.

Yes, but they'll adapt rather easily to modern mirrorless (DSLRs are S.O.L. though, since the back element gets in the mirror's way). The Takumar 50s are also known for their heavy flaring when wide open. Pic related is f/1.4.

You realize Sony donated money to partner with them so they'd bring this junk into orbit for advertising purposes, right?
Space niggers do real imaging. Imaging. Read the word. Imaging. Not photography. A consumer "photography" camera has no purpose in space.

They use raw sensors without color filters and swap custom filters for capturing real images with known wavelengths.
If they're bringing meme cameras to film the crew inside the human habitable zones, well, that's not much of an accomplishment is it? If it's fit for humans, of course any camera should work.

Got it in 2004 for my birthday. Dad spent $400 on this sucker plus the 256-512MB memory cards. It was awesome with the 4x optical zoom and fit in the back seat compartment of my motorcycle so I took it everywhere and got some great pictures. Sensor died not even three years later so my only complaint.

I’ll have to grab a few shots from my computer later, but looking back at some of the pics I’m still impressed with the quality of this little guy. They sometimes have that “DSLR” look instead of the processed iPhone camera look.

I use an f/1 prime all the time for indoor and evenings. Also night street.

>>4307573
People just have no idea what ISO actually does, and why their images are noisy in the first place.

If you don't know, here's the simple trick. If iso makes your image noisey, you didn't have enough light in the first place. All you have to do is get enough light so that you don't have any crushed blacks in your subject, and then turn iso up to get the level of exposure you want. 50 iso is for film l. There are no sensors with 50 iso as baseline. They are all 100. If your camera has <100 iso as a setting, it is a oost processing trick.

>over time, feeling like quality is starting to drop off

>I'm too busy looking for photos on my days off to really engage with people around me/with me
>my photography has become much more passive, don't really have any active thoughts around what photo I want to look for
>now all of my photos feel like I didn't "earn" them because I didn't plan them out

I know it's because of photo fatigue, but the idea of not having my camera and missing a good moment kills me. How do you guys (suggest to) go about this/have you had this happen to you?

I usually have a personal project on the side to keep my mind focused and give me a sense of direction, but I don't have any going on currently.

Quantity does not equal quality. Photography is just the degenerated form of cinema. You can take a million photos and they can only hope to be good if they all work towards the theme.

Photographers almost noticed this with winogrand, who took photos so often it was like a random selection of frames from a movie, but they missed the point entirely.
>>
>>4309205
Try to meet people you care about in places you like with your camera. Don't plan anything in particular. If the moment is right, you won't resist snapping a few pictures.

After buying 4 prime lenses, then playing around with some old lenses
I have realized one thing:
>the lenses don't really matter
>crap lens look good because they're crap >therefore more realistic
>ultra sharp lenses look digital and unreal
>it's the artifacts that makes it cinematic
>the film cameras have layers upon layers of mat box filters and lens "scent" glasses to achieve an airy cinematic look

Some photography requires sharpness and some doesn't.

I still shoot a lot of film where the contrasting nature of some of the newer lenses just doesn't play well with cheaper film stocks. There vintage is King.

But I also do a lot of night photography out in the moon light mountains sand there anything that's not a Sony g master turns to mush. For example I don't have a very sharp wide angle and always have to sharpen the one I've got in post.

I've also needed sharp lenses the few time I did product work and for digitizing my film.

Seeing the difference between lenses and art until itself. Even lenses from the '60s are sharp enough in the center so slap them onto an aps-c camera and not worry about it too much. It's on edge cases where you begin to see the difference.

>>
>>4308790
thank you for the insights
is the digital sharpened image noticeable in a double blind test against the ultra sharp g master?
>>
>>4309849
Kind of if you use the inbuilt sharpening in Lightroom, it's getting much better though. Some of the newer programs really do give amazing results .

I will say the same thing for blur. It doesn't do much if the background is sharp to begin with but turning a f2.8 portrait into an f1.4 is doable.

What it can't really do is make up for a blurry image because you didn't bring a tripod with you. With some of the new gmasters that you can practically shoot in the dark.

Back in the day people would mix vertical and landscape photos, that is the ideal. With the raise of smartphones must stuff is now vertical.
On a platform like Flickr horizontal images show larger so almost every photo is horizontal.
You should just orientate to whatever is the most common on the platform the image will be shown.

What's the best camera for shooting photography like this?

I realize Todd Hido uses a couple different Leicas (which I cannot afford)

will Ricoh griii be good for this? I have a Nikon d70s and find it's hard to use.

Also. I think because the subject matter is so boring my cell phone can't really do it well enough.

Huh, I would say a 4x5 or larger view camera would do the trick.

I just found out these can be really useful for more than just macro, which I found out that are great for getting a 1:1 ratio on your subject.

What I didn't know is something like a 105mm/2.8 also makes an outstanding portrait lens along with even an all-around good prime lens. Also typically it'll be cheaper than a similar fast lens.

Is this really the best type of lens for all pictures until you need some kind of zoom?
11 replies omitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>4309483
Not quite. A macro lens has better control of distortion especially when you focus closer. Regular lenses are not optimized for that.
>>
>>4309622
Because the DoF will be so shallow as to be useless.

>>4309623
I don't, the aperture gets reduced to around f/5.6 at close focus.
>>
>>4309479
What do you mean by 1:1 ratio on your subject?
>>
>>4310147
It means you can take a picture of a subject that is the size of your camera sensor and it will fill up the whole frame of the picture.
>>
>>4310147
It means the image projected onto the sensor is true to life size, a one to one representation. So for example if you took a picture of a ruler at 1:1 focus, one cm on the ruler will be one cm on the sensor. This of course does not mean it will be 1cm in your image, depending on resolution and cropping and whatever else you may do to the resulting image. Generally considered the minimum for a proper macro lens, despite manufacturers putting 1:2s out there and calling them “macro”.

Depends on your use case
The star eater problem is present in the A7SII under certain circumstances / firmware.
Personally I would suggest the A7III, that's what I used for astro back when I owned it, if you're lucky you can find them for $1k flat. I sold mine to a dude for that price since his camera broke, you can find good deals still.

Example image I took with the A7III.
