Serious thread. I haven't been able to find a straight, single answer on the internet.

Is it true the main Linux kernel contains binary blobs? Or have those, as is claimed, been relegated to a separate library called linux-firmware? Or is this dependent on a distro basis (ie. some make the distinction and others don't)?

Is deblobbing your kernel or using the "libre-kernel" worthwhile or is it a meme? When you deblob the kernel, are you removing binary packages and obfuscated code (as the libre enthusiasts claim) or is it just removing some code that merely provides the capacity to install firmware, but not actual binary blobs (as the detractors of the libre kernel claim)?

tl;dr - Is deblobbing your kernel a meme or a real benefit?
And does the benefit of a "free kernel" overcompensate for the risk of having no up to date CPU microcode (meaning one of the newer vulnerabilities can bite you in the ass)?
>>
>he believes in "speculation vulnerabilities"
>>
>>100215028
I don't know, the guy that created Libreboot seemed pretty critical of the libre kernel. So that made me sit up and listen.

Then again the guys making the Libre Kernel post updates every day, we've removed this or that binary package, so I want to see if the benefits outweight the costs.
>>
>>100214961
>Starting with kernel version 4.14, the entire firmware tree has been removed, rendering deblobbing unnecessary for new kernel versions. However, the Linux-libre patches go beyond deblobbing by removing certain functionalities (e.g. firmware loaders) from the kernel. Therefore, these patches remain valuable for users who prioritize software freedom over other considerations, such as security updates for CPU vulnerabilities.

>Is it true the main Linux kernel contains binary blobs?
no
>have [binary blobs] been relegated to a separate library called linux-firmware?
yes, though library isnt the right word for it
>Or is this dependent on a distro basis (ie. some make the distinction and others don't)?
distros can do whatever the fuck they want, so presumably yes, but i cant recall any distro that doesnt make the distinction (that would be stupid since firmware and the kernel get updated at different rates anyway)
>When you deblob the kernel, are you removing binary packages and obfuscated code
yes
>Is deblobbing your kernel a meme
likely meme
>And does the benefit of a "free kernel" overcompensate for the risk of having no up to date CPU microcode (meaning one of the newer vulnerabilities can bite you in the ass)?
no? how would it?

nowadays (since 4.14) the only somewhat ""meaningful"" way that linux libre differs from linux is that it doesnt contain non-trivial code, ie code that has extensively uses magic numbers and the like. if you think that somehow such code jeopardizes linux, please do go for linux-libre. otherwise i dont see why you would

Alternatively, use a light version of Office 365 through your browser since it's free,
or try OnlyOffice/LibreOffice and set it to save as MS Office file formats.

Download the ISO off Archive (the link is in previous threads), look up the ISO filename on files.rg-adguard and cross reference the SHA/MD5 with 7zip or something to see if it's been tampered with or not.

It's not on rg-adguard at all.

Hello I'm looking for wireless earbuds.

The best audio quality

Reliable

Sub 100$

Basic wireless functions (play/pause)

I don't care for transparency/noise canceling.

For comparison I'm currently using Google pixel buds 99$

I listen to everything.
>>
Google pixel buds, they're $99
>>
>>100215353
I can't find any boards on wireless earbuds, it's all headphones stuff.
>>
>>100215327
Galaxy Buds FE should be very good and they're under $100. They look like a refresh of the 2020 Buds+ which were almost too good to be true at the time.
Rtings also lists them pretty close to the top of their list for audio quality, for whatever that's worth.
But the Google ones aren't too much worse apparently, so... is there some reason you're looking to replace them?
It's going to be hard to find any decent reviews today, search engines will not point you towards them no matter what you do and reddit is also dead and unsearchable.
>>
>>100215517
They don't charge sometimes. Like the case doesn't recognize that their inside. So I'll be listening to one but then realized that the other one wasn't charging and it was actually on the whole time. You can even see it if you go to blootooth options on the phone.

Linux bro's, why Gentoo?
Explain it to me.

Ubuntu: easy to use and widely compatible with applications who have wide compatibility with Windows world, therefore work related, distro is about compatibility and stability priorized over getting newest packages

Arch: everything is newest shit you can possibly have and you can even make powerful gayming with it (I am not a gaymer though)

Debian: even older stuff than Ubuntu but I guess very stable

Gentoo: ??? you compile everything by yourself, what have you won?

control.
people get caught up on the everything built from source thing since they're midwits.
gentoo isn't about having the latest stuff,
(by default the absolute latest packages aren't installed)
or the fastest stuff,
(improvements are gonna be slim unless you test unstable optimizations with every package)
foundationally gentoo is about about control.
the only reason building from source is the default is to facilitate said control.
with portage, arguably the best package manager, and some additional tools for comfort, you can do whatever the hell you want. if you want to strip cjk characters out of nearly every package you can do it, you wanna install systemd you can do it, you wanna install multiple versions of the same package you can do it. list goes on.
simple as.

>arch
arch is very similar, gentoo even uses arch-chroot during install in fact, and you do get a wide margin of control, but not on the compiler flag level unless you're using mostly PKGBUILDs from the AUR at which point you'd be better off with gentoo+guru overlay. arch also doesn't support non systemd init systems and anything that isnt x86_64, limiting your control over your init system and hardware

Bad idea to put linux on an sd card for a laptop, and dualboot it with Windows 11 already on the ssd?
>>
>>100215498
Never mind, a quick search has revealed it's not the best idea because most laptops usually won't boot from the sd card slot, and it would run extrmely slow.
>>
>>100215498
SD cards have way lower write cycles than SSDs. So you will fuck it by running something that will constantly write to it.

NVIDIA and AMD hate you
they won't even allow you to interface with the HDMI port without using proprietary drivers, the only reason noveau and intel GPUs can do it is by emulating the proprietary chip that does the handshake and faking it. hell intel GPUs actuallt jave a discrete chio in the HDMI ports that pretend to be an NVIDIA HDMI adaptor just to get it working

It doesn't matter, other versions are not even at the end of the list and if somehow what you say is true that would mean Ubuntu is not that popular among normal users as it seems, it can barely win with Arch, an independent distro that is targeted at "experienced" users.

could anybody let me know about new hardware that meets the following criteria:

1) super cheap (less than $20)
2) supports hdmi or vga or dvi out or etc
3) available through retail channels (not used or old stuff, thats easy)
4) any architecture is fine
