Ah forgot to reply when I saw this earlier thanks for giving me a direction to look in

Systemd is the epitome of big government control. It's a bloated, intrusive system that hijacks our computer's boot process and forces us to comply with its one-size-fits-all approach to managing services. It's like the government telling us how to run our businesses, instead of letting us choose what works best for our individual needs. Systemd is the antithesis of personal freedom and innovation, and we must fight back against its authoritarian grip on our computers. It's time to take a stand and reclaim our right to control our own systems.

I got £1k. What laptop (new) should I buy.
I am not into stinkpads. all my stinkpads used/new felt like cheap fragile machines.
Requirements:
>no overheat
>preferably >=16 gigs of ram
>good battery life on linux.
>non soldered storage
>uhhk my old mobo has pcie 3 x 4 or something… ik there are better ones so at least nvme pcie 5 or something.
i don’t know if intel or amd is better or if i should get an integrated/dedicated card. i wouldn’t mind a bit of gayming but i got a desktop for that anyway.

ProBook or Latitude with an Nvidia GPU + upgradeable RAM. Don't go too old on the machine or you have to tolerate a 1366x768 screen, 1080p 14" screens do exist and aren't rare, but 768p is still too common for the modern day, in my opinion.

jesus christ, the level of compression is horrendous.
I've had S1 of JoJos Bizarre Adventure downloading for the last 3 days because the BD Remux was 180GB.
I'm not surprised it looks bad if you compress it down as much as your files are.

The ideal codec is the one that looks the best, and most of them fall short when it comes to maintaining motion resolution.

>cd's use 8 to 14 encoding where the entire CD audio is stored on disc as individual 8 bit chunks, each uniquely encoded to a special 14 bit number whereby any couple of missing numbers can be guessed and the sample thereby reconstructed

This is also done to help offset the effects of sampling, since each sample is discrete and does not have any relation to the next or previous sample. Encoding parity data allows for audibly smooth transitions between samples as the data that is discarded during the digital sampling process can be replicated by 'reasonable estimation'.

I MISS REMOVABLE BATTERIes

Imagine the switch and steam deck with this shit. Bring 2-3 batteries with you and swap them out easily.

Portable tech is nearly useless without it. It felt more high tech 15 years ago when I could just swap batteries on all my devices.

Useless an average android comes with 65w charger some even 120w charger, goes from 0 to 100 in 30 minutes, and the batteries have been improved so much that u won't need to change it at all, my 3 yo old chinkoid is still 95% original capacity i don't remember the last time it died or i charged it to 100%, i just plug it as i go for a quick bump in 15 minutes

Absolutely nobody, anywhere, ever, will distinguish your glass rectangle from the rest of them. You would have to go to the settings and show "About device" to confirm the exact model and hope they know it. If you're masturbating to the thought of all the bystanders being shocked by your new phone you're exactly the type of sheeple that companies wish would exist.

This is gonna be a bit of a chaotic post, and I am a board tourist, so bear with me please.

I want to buy the most reliable and rugged hard drive(althought it's not like I'll be throwing it around, for me it's mostly gonna be lying in a drawer, so the ultra-protection from falling/shaking thing is secondary to me, but would be nice if it's an additional benefit not negatively impacting the normal behaviour of the drive). I want an HDD because I've heard that SSD can lose data if not powered for a year. Which HDD model is the most reliable/has the greatest longevity before dying? Even if I'm only gonna be plugging it in sporadically for backups, I would still like to buy the most reliable model for obvious reasons. Is there something like the Backblaze report, but for smaller, consumer drives?
https://www.backblaze.com/blog/backblaze-drive-stats-for-2023/
Those hard drives are big(and the prices too), 4TB at the least, I only need like 64-128GB of storage, preferably external with USB connection. From what I know there are also enclosures for internal drives to make them work like external ones.
Or do they not make small drives anymore? I have no idea of the modern HDD market. I want to buy three small drives for backups. Speed of the drive doesn't matter at all. Or should I just say fuck it and buy whatever since it's improbable all three drives are gonna die on me at the exact same time? Any good articles about external HDDs? Are websites like PCMag/Tom's Hardware reliable sources of information or are they shills? Their recommendations like "Best External Storage 2024" any good at all? Or are there better websites?
Basically I want to buy three good external hard drives and not break the bank.

>also buy an external USB 3 HDD case which accepts anykind of HDD and is not locked into some brand

as far as I understood this means Seagate and WD branded external drive cages would not allow any other brand HDD inside

meanwhile, if you buy an empty HDD cage named Kolink, it will allow any drive (3.5" SATA) and it cost 20 USD worth of Poland monies
>>
>>100209419
Sounds legit
>>
>>100209419
It's not that the Seagate/WD cases do not allow, it is simply that their logic boards have built-in USB, so you would be missing SATA-to-USB conversion if you removed Seagate and WD drives from their cases and tried to add something different.
In the past, external HDDs were simply internal HDDs with USB and 12V adapters, allowing us to convert those drives to internal when desired, or during sales when 2TB and 4TB externals became cheaper than internal equivalents.

I'm really enjoying Plasma 6, but I have to say that it is a little heavier on memory that I would like, plus there are a shitload of packages. So I'm very XFCE curious, especially now that I'm not going back to Gayland.

Two questions for an XFCE chad:
- How good are the keybindings? I don't need full tiling, but I control KDE with all keybindings (splits, super+1-9 for task bar) and its basically as fast as I ever was on i3.
- I have to say I've enjoyed the look and feel of all the QT apps that I've used so far, is GTK actually that bad?

>% vision loss
Dunno. Its treated like magical age loss, mostly since non invasive studies has just barely arrived this decade

>myopia
Been figured out since the Bates method and army data from early mass conscription... Basically when you focus on a object, the eye pressures the lens to do that, and the lens slightly change shape
The catch is that the sharpest focus is NOT neutral focus, meaning you bend the lens towards near focus myopia. And one do not that naturally for far away objects; to bend it in the other direction towards hyperopia.

Myopia is treatable by forcing yourself to do the eye motion on far objects that will long term cause hyperopia. Gains of 1D a year is possible.

>meme image
that mostly for eye dominance/astigma and therefore depth of field.

I have no idea about long term health, but for short term strain I find just turning the brightness down to the lowest setting that's still easily usable helps a lot, regardless of using light or dark mode (I prefer and use dark mode for a few things, but mostly gave up trying to consistently have it)

I'm far sighted and stumbled upon this and have been practicing going some time without wearing glasses and it does work. I'll probably never be able to read without glasses, but it's surprising how much sharp detail I can get without glasses. It feels more like dyslexia, because I can see clearly but reading is almost impossible except for stuff like large labels, but at the same time I can see dry wall texture and wood grain clearly. Although it certainly takes a little bit of time to "focus" my eyes or whatever, it's certainly not as easily as wearing glasses.

>Your post ignores my point - that there is no benefit to "undervolting" as it just increases heat.
Wrong, kiddo. Undervolting reduces thermal output by putting a limit much current can flow to the socket (assuming amps remain the same)
The main drawback of undervolting is that silicon might be stable at stock clockspeed so you might have also underclock to compensate.
The main take is that both AMD and Intel are pushing their consumer-tier hardware far beyond their efficient curve to just keep a vocal, minority of min-maxer satisfied on silly epenis benchmark and also to hide the fact that silicon has been plateauing.

>> Be me, an 18 year old Electronics Engineer

>> Couple of years ago I want to get into game dev so I revive a dead HL2 mod called Vance after building up a team, all goes well for 2 years and all of the sudden the old lead dev has had enough because he thinks im taking too long with development when the main reason why he cancelled his project was over toxicity, drama and not getting shit done. So now Vance is in the hands of a bigger team than mine was which to their credit seems to be doing pretty good but the old lead dev has spread some false rumors to them in which now they hate me.

During Vance development I decided I want to grow a studio so I did just that and after Vance I decided I wanted to do a new and original WW2 game, sure there are countless WW2 games but I wanted to breathe new life into the genre. I brought on my old guys from Vance, we were doing development in Unreal Engine 5 and were making very amazing progress. Unfortunately a lot a had to leave due to irl shit. Given the size of the project I can't do everything alone but I have done most of it myself already.

Adding onto this post, I got a custom game launcher releasing soon that does a number of things differently to steam, it may not be the most practical but I also want to help out other small developers. I got my own Account System and API. I got an agar.io clone utilizing my API "RationalID" and I hope to work with other developers to release their games under my platform with a far less than %70 cut because that's what steam takes which is very absurd.

My site is https://rationalstudios.org and you can even contact me there, so much for being an anon on 4chan.
>>
>>100208287
Steam charges that cut because it costs a lot to manage that level of traffic that they do. What you're doing is really based but keep in mind if your game launcher project scales up it will become much more resource intensive to maintain.

One day while Marisa was out in the Forest of Magic, she came across a strange object lying on the ground. It was small and cylindrical, with a smooth metal surface that glowed faintly in the darkness of the forest.

Marisa picked up the object and turned it over in her hands, wondering what it could be. She didn't recognize it as anything she had ever seen before, but it felt warm to the touch and gave off a faint hum.

Curiosity piqued, Marisa decided to take the object with her and ask Rinnosuke at Kourindou if he knew what it was. She tucked it into her bag and headed towards the human village.

When she arrived at Kourindou, she found Rinnosuke in his shop, fiddling with some mechanical gadget or another. "Hey Kourin!" she called out as she approached. "I've got something weird here that I want to show you."

Rinnosuke looked up and raised an eyebrow at the object Marisa pulled out of her bag. "What is it?" he asked skeptically.

"No idea," Marisa replied with a shrug. "I found it in the forest, and I thought maybe you'd know what it was for."

Rinnosuke took the object from Marisa and turned it over in his hand. He had the prenatural ability to know the name and purpose of an object, however this ability did not tell him how exactly the object was to be used, or any more detail than that. The ability only told him that the device he held in his hand was a "radioisotope thermoelectric generator"
and its purpose was to boil water.
