On a serious note. Talking about some of the failures of recent figuarts products, how many of these are purely down to poor engineering and how much is due to the design of the source material? Things like Luffys shorts, Zoros robe, Ichigos knees, Guts armor. What are some examples of these design aspects being done well and how can bandai improve?

Negligent engineering. They could've made that flap in the back work fine like it does on the new version, and they could've just given better legs. Like ones that can extend ever so slightly so that the knees reach below the cuff of the shorts. Then give him a good old double knee joint and let him bend the knees around the shorts.

Probably design of the source material a bit. They should've waited until they got further into doing soft goods for him.

Definitely engineering. They already did better with some other figures, like the Geto from JJK. Way, way better. That said, I've grown used to the Bleach knees. They may not be a good as I want them to be, but they work and are functional, at least.

HoP Guts is actually mostly super well engineered. The legs, knees, chest, butterfly. It really is just the shoulder join that sucks, and it's mainly because it's such a small rickety thing. They had a homerun right there, but they had to stop short of the finish line by unnecessarily giving him shoulder joints tailor-made to fall apart.

As the one whose Guts broke, I'm going to stand behind my point that Guts is 90% amazingly engineered and articulated. Like, if I could have the same figure but with different shoulder joints that don't pop apart on me? It'd be a 10/10 any day. When I was gushing over it (picrel) in the thread, I wasn't joking about it. But then comes that one joint, just that arm joint falling apart, and it sours the whole ordeal.
It almost makes me angry that they had such a good figure on their hands but didn't think to give him sturdier/better arm joints. Because the rest is great.

I'd say if you're in for a full series ranma is worth checking out because its easy to fall into the rabbit hole with lupin given how much there is in terms of movies and different series. On the flipside if you just wanna watch one or two of the lupin movies you can do that, they're easy enough to slip into even without knowing much about them beforehand. I know this is 100% probably the normie recommendation that everyone would give but castle of cagliostro is still really fun and gives you a feel for the series and if you'd want to watch more

I am buying them because there are no Bleach figures inbound anytime soon from any other company, and I've grown used to the legs. That doesn't mean I LIKE them.

I wonder if that has to do with the sculptor/designer teams that Bandai is seemingly expanding on. Back then when Figuarts was still a Kamen Rider line pretty much all the sculptors are involved in Kamen Rider and once the line expanded to other IPs it was still the same people designing so some of the non-Toku Figuarts are a bit shoddy due to being out of their expertise. Then Bandai presumably hires additional sculptors, some freshbloods to help and the non-Toku Figuarts got decent. I feel that the team working on the anime-centric line (excluding Dragon Ball) we've been getting are pretty new and sometimes don't know what they're doing, like the design choices for the Hakama knees. Would be nice to know the sculptors/designers that Bandai employs, only ones I know is the guy currently doing the SS Gaim line or the Dragon Ball designer and that's because both got a featured interview.

The manga is a rushed piece of shit. Like actually. Not even memeing everything after shibuya arc collapses all at once. Characters are forgotten or written out and never mentioned. Main plotline with main villain just ends abrubtly and becomes nonsensical. It also becomes MASSIVE walls of texts that just explains how mechanics of skills work just so the reader can even follow what the fuck is going on. It feels like reading a science paper at times, like holy fuck. Then the main fight is an absolute blunder and since the auther doesn't know where the fuck he's going himself it gets more dumb every single chapter. They get sidechaters from earlier chapters and just throw them in the meatgrinder just to pull UHM BUT ACTUALLY HE WASN'T DEFEATED YET and then kicked away in one pannel and retired again.

It's the biggest fucking slop of the manga industry right now. I can't even recommend reading it and I am an original "fan" not an anime pleb like most of you. Also the only cool guy has pink hair and it looks so shit in color while in black and white he looks badass

On the other hand chainsaw man gets only good with the next season (at least in the manga) but also drops the ball in part 2 (so far).

Also makes you wonder if the additional $30 for the full price release (essentially twice as much) was REALLY worth only a tie, mouth and pair of hands. I stand by chainsaw man being a really good figure but he definitely should have come with some blood effects at least, bare minimum, at his price. Hell, Denji/chainsaw man should have been ONE release from the getgo with swappable arms and heads but they're greedy fucks.

I think unless you're someone who is a really big fan of the character and will get max mileage out of those few accessories, the cheaper one is a no brainer. Like for the original figure that cost twice as much you could've spent it on the best selection and have enough left over for like another whole $30 figure.

The original wasn't really 60, anyway. Not at retail, at least.
The best selection would have to be like 20-25 to be considerably cheaper.

This WAS my stance before Bandai fucked with Denji's shoulders.
My POV was that the SHF Chainsaw Man and SHF Denji together would basically be around the same price, maybe a teensy bit (by like 500JPY) more expensive than the Figma, and for that, you'd get a way better Chainsaw Man, and an *ok* Denji. And since the Chainsaw Man body was one of the best engineered, best moving and most fun to pose releases of its year, the Denji would be at least as good in that sense, which means you pay about 500JPY more for the two SHF and get two figures with great bodies and one or two more accessories than the Figma.


Aaaaand then they fucked Denji's shoulders for no conceivable reason. (Other than, I guess, to sell the Chainsaw Man figure again for replacement shoulders. It might be a bit conspiracy theory-y, but that's the only reason I can possibly think of for why they fucked with a mold that didn't need any fucking with and ruined what could've been an easy and good release.)

I have samurai sword and aside from the coat getting in the way of some poses he's also great, maybe same issue as chainsaw man himself where for the price point there should have been some sword or blood effects, maybe a stand at least. I'm not getting denji or makima but both look kinda bad, hopefully it doesn't mean tamashi are nosediving on this line like they have with so many others recently

Yeah I'm not a diehard SHF guy, I have just as many figmas, but I think the chainsaw man line is one of the rare cases where SHF is just the clear winner, instead of in most instances where its more subjective, or some sort of trade off where like figma might have better faces but slighlty more limited articulation or something. At least that was the case until both lines Makima's look underwhelming. At least I'm lucky in that I didn't want a figure of her anyways.
