Does anyone have any examples of gyarus/gals from thsg time? I know that gyaru as people know it now didn't start until the 90s-00s but I've heard that the term started around in the 80s. So I was wondering if anyone had any examples of these 80s gals. Really anything works.
the term gyaru was introduced into japanese in the 70s, not the style. this is a conflation by westerners. gyaru wasn't a name originally used by girls who wore the style, but rather labeled as such by the media. even in your image it says that the term gyaru was used to refer to any trendy girl in their 20s, giving the example "ikeikegyaru" which translates to vibrant energetic gal.
I'm a near-complete beginner to con culture and the "scene" due to zero exposure to it until recently and I have too many questions swimming around in my head that I need to ask. How is it usually, you just say or show which doujinshi you want to buy and you give them your money, or can small talk happen? In small cons in my own country I've made small talk with some artists but Japanese cons look so crowded I have a hard time imagining it.

My horror story isn't so bad but sucked at the time - roomed with friend (con-goer) and their mom (non-con-goer). In the days before public wifi. Friend's mom is obese and snores insanely loud all 2 nights of 3 day con so neither me nor my friend get any sleep. Then the mom racks up hugeass phone bill by calling relatives on hotel phone - didn't listen to the receptionist's instructions during check-in, nor read the instructions written on the phone, both explaining it's not free. Friend's mom can't afford to pay own phone bill, irately argues with hotel staff for 2 hours while my mom drives down to bail her out and pay for her.

>>10911848I only cosplay as guys, but it seems to me that many "typical" male chars in anime/manga have boring or downright ugly as hell outfits even if their personalities are ok. See: Dr. Stone. Great male chars often have clothes so generic (such as a random-ass suit or the same clothes and hair as 600 other characters) that he's not recognizable as a cosplay. Female chars and bishie chars seem, on the whole, to always have more recognizable clothing. Dunno if this plays into anything.

Does visible acne (maybe even with no attempt to cover it) ruin a person's cosplay for you? How much does it bother you compared to other commonly-complained-about accuracy dealbreakers in cosplay like obeseness/scrawniness, height, wildly inaccurate races, etc?

The right makeup can cover acne pretty well. But idealy you should do something to clear it up. Spend the months leading up to con season to take care of it.
