Does anyone have any examples of gyarus/gals from thsg time? I know that gyaru as people know it now didn't start until the 90s-00s but I've heard that the term started around in the 80s. So I was wondering if anyone had any examples of these 80s gals. Really anything works.
the term gyaru was introduced into japanese in the 70s, not the style. this is a conflation by westerners. gyaru wasn't a name originally used by girls who wore the style, but rather labeled as such by the media. even in your image it says that the term gyaru was used to refer to any trendy girl in their 20s, giving the example "ikeikegyaru" which translates to vibrant energetic gal.
I'm a near-complete beginner to con culture and the "scene" due to zero exposure to it until recently and I have too many questions swimming around in my head that I need to ask. I've only been to a couple of small ones in my mostly-desolate area and I want to step up to traveling to bigger ones but I'm overwhelmed. Please bear with me.>Do a majority of congoers cosplay? I know it's common, but is it seen as a faux pas to not cosplay?>Likewise, is it seen as a faux pas to wear the same cosplay more than once in a multi-day event, or to not wear it some days?>I've read a lot on this board about "after hours" events and parties that aren't scheduled by the con staff. Do you have to get invited to things like that, or how do people find out about them?>Do cons that don't have a stated sub-demographic (ones that use terms like "fandom" or "pop culture" instead of specifically "fantasy" or "otaku" or something) tend to accept all demographics? Would you be looked at weird for going to something more "western" like SDCC in an anime cosplay, or would you expect to see a lot of them? >Why do some huge cons like Colossal and Dragon seem to place such significance on getting a hotel room onsite as opposed to just being nearby? Surely not just traffic, right?>What's a "gull"? >How do you not get sick every time you go to one? >How do you keep track of scheduling for multiple cons across multiple years? Do you get notified about them? When is "con season"?>If you're partying, how do you deal with inevitable hangovers or crashes? And some more personal questions>If you cosplay, what's normally your budget? Both in terms of time and money. >How do you make friends at a con if you're not going with a group?>How many cons do you go to yearly or on a recurring basis? There are a fuckton I want to see but I'm not sure if my expectations are unreasonable.Thank you for your time.
>>10912971From the experience of people I know, jp cons pale in comparision to the big US cons, cosplay restrictions really kill the vibe, and you'll meet the occasional racism in sellers refusing to sell doujin to foreigners for fear of them scanlating it. But Japan is Japan, you'll still have fun.
>>10913007I'm not American, the biggest con I've been to was Japan Expo in Paris but from what I've seen on /cgl/ it's more or less organized the same way. >you'll meet the occasional racism in sellers refusing to sell doujin to foreigners for fear of them scanlating itI don't plan on scanlating anything to begin with, I hope there won't be any misunderstanding because of this. I look racially ambiguous but I don't think that's going to help in my case. I also plan on shopping in Akihabara's and Nakano's Mandarake but if I want new stuff I might as well get them during the con.
>>10913014Might be a lot more fun for you then, I've been to a few Euro cons and they were shit. It's not like you walk up to a seller and announce you're going to scanlate. They assume just by the fact that you look or sound foreign that you're going to scanlate. If you look Japanese and either your Japanese is perfect or you can do the entire interaction without saying anything then you should be completely safe. If that's not the case just be prepared that someone may refuse to sell to you - and I'm not saying all sellers are like that but some are.
>>10913158This isn't just about doujins. As a white foreigner who speaks Japanese, when I tell Japanese people I consume anime/manga they often assume I do it illegally and they start to take an automatic moral stance. It blows their mind when I say I use Rakuten eBooks, Abema, Japanese Amazon Prime and so on and do it legally. Or maybe I've just met jerks.
>>10913158>>10913160I'm French, and Japanese people usually know that France is nearly as obsessed with manga as they are so I doubt anyone will assume I read manga illegally. At least the ones I interacted with. Maybe they assume this because the first country they think of when thinking about the West is the US, and anime are way more popular than manga there and for a long time it was easier to find series by pirating them than by actually buying VHS or DVDs or blurays? idk I'm trying to understand.>If you look JapaneseAbsolutely not, the closest to this was when Indians in Japan assumed I was Indian and Pakistanis assuming I was Pakistani. I don't look Asian at all though, and certainly don't look mixed either. and either your Japanese is perfect or you can do the entire interaction without saying anything then you should be completely safe.I have an intermediate level in Japanese, I can do small talk easily but can make some mistakes here and there because I forgot a lot of words and kanji, and I'm not used to talking in Japanese in general. It's not a problem at all when shopping in actual stores but I don't know how conversations tend to go with sellers/fans in cons in Japan. How is it usually, you just say or show which doujinshi you want to buy and you give them your money, or can small talk happen? In small cons in my own country I've made small talk with some artists but Japanese cons look so crowded I have a hard time imagining it.
Thread for good cosplays that are suggestive but still for a blue board (no nudity)
>>10913019A Tiona cosplay would be pretty risque and sexy too.
>>10913019Imagine her walking around the convention dressed like this

>>10913043That wouldn't be a surprise, she's a cute petite girl.Enjoy yourself.
So I roomed with other people this year of the first time and it was actually a fantastic time. Why do people always make this seem like shit? Any of you got any horror stories
>>10810063J for Jamal and M for Melissa (who was white)
>>10816851Lmao amazing
>>10901290I've taken to using instant film for a lot of that as I get older. Gives people a cool memento, but it's gone for 20 quid a pack to over 100 and they're a lot less reliable since the last ones expired in 2019. Still feels special. I might just adapt the damned thing to run on instax.
My horror story isn't so bad but sucked at the time - roomed with friend (con-goer) and their mom (non-con-goer). In the days before public wifi. Friend's mom is obese and snores insanely loud all 2 nights of 3 day con so neither me nor my friend get any sleep. Then the mom racks up hugeass phone bill by calling relatives on hotel phone - didn't listen to the receptionist's instructions during check-in, nor read the instructions written on the phone, both explaining it's not free. Friend's mom can't afford to pay own phone bill, irately argues with hotel staff for 2 hours while my mom drives down to bail her out and pay for her.

>covid is over>too shy to cosplay without a mask
>>10907364YWNBAW
>>10907364know what you need?
>>10912244If 162cm 47kg is fat, then sure.
>>10908739cosplay is a hobby with a lot of leftists who love virtue signaling. covid related stuff like masks, social distancing, vaccines, are the ultimate form of virtue signaling because you are literally saving lives and those who don't are literally killing people I despise these people because they made conventions a no-go zone for 3 years
>>10912828All true, but there were also plenty of pussies who outright said "I love that we all need masks because, nobody should see my ugly face". Peak skill issue + not my problem, so not sure how that works. Plus kids either in or right out of uni are STILL the most likely crowd to mask in general, so some of them must still be afraid of getting sick. Not that any of this invalidates what you wrote, more the exact opposite really
peter griffin or cosplay whoever you want dude xd
What do yall think of her? honestly i love her so much, she reminds me of belle delphine a bit. i think of buying her patreon but idk if it's worth it, like tell me what you think
>>10912871I hate Belle Delphine.
she looks like belle but i dunno if it's a flex to look like a child bait for pdf's
>>10912887>look like a childEven she claims that she looks like a child and calls her fans pedophiles but all I see is an emaciated 20yo-proportioned woman.>pdf'sYou can say pedophiles without being demonetized here. Not that the mods here aren't pedo groomers like in other platforms. They're just negligentful and won't ban you unless you insult their posse or they hate your show.
>the year is 2017>everyone at the con is checking their streetpasses every 30 minuteswe'll never get this back, and it hurts so much
>>10909224I wasn't being cynical when it comes to cons in the current decade. Cons now are still not as good as 00's cons, but they're way better than 2010's cons. The only big thing I miss from the 2010's that's gone now is viewing rooms since they were somewhere to go when you ran out of things to do and didn't feel like going through the dealer hall for the fifth time.
Is it still possible to do local? Example, acnl locally? Thanks
>>10900384Pre-2009 was peak conventions.Basically just people interested in anime, games and Jrock. That was before they started milking Marvel/DC movies, so you didn't have to deal with people cosplaying cringe Super Heroes™ at cons.No cancel culture around that time either (People didn't see "Boothbabes" as a problem that can LITERALLY DESTROY THE SOCIETY), we didn't have organizers dedicating panels to discuss "diversity" or "how we must do X in order to fight against Y in the gaming industry".
>>10905358I went to a small local con this December and I only met 4 people with my 3DS, it was so sad. I plan on going to Japan in June and will go to some big event, I'll bring my 3DS with me and see how it goes but I have low expectation and will mostly take my 3DS to play in the plane anyway.
i went to a 100 gecs concert last year and people were doing this in line

Sewing Thread: post your sewing related questions here. What threads do you guys use? I need recommendations for strong wholesale thread sites
>>10910663Well then I guess you're not going to bend your arms or flex the entire time. Suck it up for physics.A looser sleeve for the whole length will look less awkward than a bulge or a hole at the elbow.
Is there any truely invisible thread, that's not shiny? Or could I dunk transparent plastic thread in something to remove the shine and make it less visible?
>>10867953I specifically bought a $50, 1950s children's sewing machine because there's no bobbin (and it doesn't use electricity, and it fits in a backpack). It improved my motivation to sew.
>>10911026sort of. go in person to buy the matching thread. bring a scrap of your fabric along with you. hold it up, scan around the shop display with it, and zero in on the spool of thread whose color is identical to the fabric. and then leave it there. don't purchase this color thread that looks so exactly the same you think there's no way in hell it could be anything other than a perfect match. instead check this spool's immediate neighbors because the /actual/ perfect match is still that same color but just a shade or two darker. an exercise. if you live with or near someone who sews, you can maybe raid their stash for edification. gather three spools of the same color thread that are, relative to the fabric: 1) exactly identical in HSV, 2) one shade or two lighter in V, and 3) one shade or two darker in V.>set fabric on table flat>set spools on fabric>pick a spool>unreel few inches of thread from it>lay this single strand across fabric>repeat other two spools>step few paces backwards>observeresults? thread 1 will visibly stand out a little. thread 2 will stand out a lot more. thread 3 has effectively disappeared.
I'm embroidering my girlfriend an animal crossing hat for her birthday, does this look like the right pattern for LA ISLA? I'm most dubious about the Ls
Do you agree with this popular cosplay girl's opinions on male cosplays?
>>10911848cosplay an utena boy
>>10865342Looks ok to meBut I'm a man...
i miss the era when men would at least wear shitty half-assed cosplay for fun. feels so rare now. the last con I had fun at was one where I could say "uh yeah I guess you ARE waluigi"
>>10911848I only cosplay as guys, but it seems to me that many "typical" male chars in anime/manga have boring or downright ugly as hell outfits even if their personalities are ok. See: Dr. Stone. Great male chars often have clothes so generic (such as a random-ass suit or the same clothes and hair as 600 other characters) that he's not recognizable as a cosplay. Female chars and bishie chars seem, on the whole, to always have more recognizable clothing. Dunno if this plays into anything.
>>10912752This is always cope There’s plenty of easily recognizable interesting male outfits, you’re just too gay to watch them. Literally just pick a random character from any generic fujobait gachagame
Excluding the superhero and scifi genres (which seem to be their own crazy things), does cosplay of Western or heavily America/Europe-inspired series attract a better or worse level of cosplay than typical anime?
My favorite Miku cosplay pic

Does visible acne (maybe even with no attempt to cover it) ruin a person's cosplay for you? How much does it bother you compared to other commonly-complained-about accuracy dealbreakers in cosplay like obeseness/scrawniness, height, wildly inaccurate races, etc?
>>10912456Acne I can ignore because depending on body chemistry it’s not always preventable. Those chapped fucking lips on the other hand are very preventable
>>10912456It honestly depends on the one's acne, but if all if his or her face is a fucking covered in landmines, It's bad.
The right makeup can cover acne pretty well. But idealy you should do something to clear it up. Spend the months leading up to con season to take care of it.
It's over
>>10912456I'm not bothered by height or race. However anything that makes someone look unhealthy or like a cheap whore kills it for me.Acne makes me feel sad for the person because I remember being a teen and researching desperately for how to stop acne, and all anything I could find said was "it's just genetics" and "cover it with some cream" bullcrap. You really have to stop eating anything containing cooking oils, among other things. Unlike an obese lady choosing to go to a con in a bikini, absolutely no one wants acne, so I feel like anyone who has it just hasn't been told how to stop it.
Which do you prefer>Looking as close to the source material as possible, even if that means a lack of details or lack of realism in the clothing/hair.>A realistic version of the cosplay, how it would have been if the char were a real-life person, even if there are details to the cosplay not supported by canon
>>10912673Whatever appeals to the eye more IRL. So people doing stupid ass thinge like fucking up their eyebrows to match a cartoon tends to look 100x uglier than leaving them mostly alone.
