From the readme:
Despite scorn in recent years, Final Fantasy VII's English translation is excellent. It's difficult to imagine how millions of English speakers would consider it among the greatest stories ever written if the very English version they played truly were the indecipherable mess it's sometimes made out to be.

It did however deserve a proofreading. Not from another Japanese speaker, but another English speaker.

This hack is thus a very conservative update to the game's field text; by editing the script concurrently with playing the game in-full, I've fixed awkward grammarisms, removed instances of "the Shinra", incorporated the best of the PC version's text changes, and tried to make sense of what little truly made no sense.

As I wanted to play to the strengths of the beloved and unique English version, I have only very sparingly referenced the Japanese script, and in 99% of such cases it was simply to make sense of any nonsense I could not intuit from the English script alone. This means Aeris still calls Zack her first boyfriend, Tifa still calls Barret a retard, and Cait Sith is still in the game.

This is the Final Fantasy VII you remember.

>>10944992
Pretty sure it's exactly 0 because it essentially does the same as "Decompile program" in IDA, that is converting kilometers of unlabeled MIPS assembly into kilometers of unlabeled C code. So from unreadable into unreadable (but compilable). There's tons of actual work to be done by a human brain before the thing the recompiler spits out can become somewhat remotely close to moddable.

The whole QLDC is fucking weird. There's one hack where you travel through a rainy field making awkard jums past static blocks. If you get hit by them you're trapped in a quiz show. Eventually you get trapped in a choose your own adventure. The timer runs out, the game softlocks, and you can never play it again.

It might be optimal to try a cheat code. Gamefaqs.com has plenty of options, plus gamehacking.org does requests.

If a more permanent solution is necessary, first check if there's a disassembly or decompilation. It could make hacking much easier for whoever helps. Here's a handy list: https://www.retroreversing.com/source-code/decompiled-retail-console-games

If you mention the game title here you might find someone willing to help out or point you in the right direction.

>cave story port to sega genesis actually works
what the fuck is up with that system
both it and the nes seem to be the only ones with consistent homebrews
>>
>>10960163
>why does Genesis get so much homebrew
68000-series CPU means flat memory map. Makes it retard-easy to program for since you never need to learn about bank switching or dealing with other memory-related quirks like you would with 6502-family CPUs, x86-family CPUs, etc.
The sound chip set has it's own Z80 CPU to control things and play music independent of the main CPU, and there's more than a few sound solutions already available that are pretty much plug-n-play. It's not just GEMS anymore. Doing music and sound effects with the Genesis is retard-easy compared to most systems, while still having plenty of flexibility and depth.
The VDP is an all-in-one graphical solution, no expansion chips(outside the SVP which no one uses). There is zero fear of starting a project only to find you needed a stronger mapper or different expansion chip and having to re-write large parts of your code, or feeling the need to use the most powerful expansion chip available to avoid that situation. On top of that, the CPU and VDP can communicate fast enough with RAM and VRAM and the cartridge to be capable of re-drawing the entire screen with entirely new data at 30FPS. You don't need to worry about having enough time in the retrace to do all your graphical loading, or have to cut down on the playfield to keep the framerate up.
Thanks to the flat memory map and lack of expansion chips, making your own homebrew Genesis physical cartridge is cheap and easy, just flash the EEPROM chip, socket it in, and go. With the Genesis being dirt cheap since the late 90's all the way up until today, it's a very cheap console to acquire and develop games for. It's only gotten easier with SGDK.
The NES is popular for homebrew because it's simpler than the SNES or N64. The GB/GBC should be more popular, but it's a bit too simple for most starting homebrew dev's idea for their first game.

>>10960221
The 68000 is also piss easy to program complex stuff thanks to having a large amount of registers and very large third party support (Amiga and Apple computers used them too).

It's the old PS2 game, LaPucelle Tactics
Or more specifically, the recent NintendoSwitch version of the Japanese PSP release, LaPucelle Ragnarok
I've heard there's a PC version too

Though the item im looking for, I'm fairly certain was present in all versions

Item in question is the best SP-healing item, allegedly called the "Elixshroom"

I've made threads about it on GameFAQs, talked with some people on Steam threads

Nobody is able to provide screencaps and/or evidence that they've ever acquired it
It's the only item im missing on my current save, that's for sure

Ragnarok version added an NPC that provides game details on your file, including item collection %, with prizes for hitting certain benchmarks
This didn't exist in the vanilla PS2 version, and there was no endgame prize/criteria for "collecting everything" so there's no in-depth analysis made by anyone anywhere, on how/where specifically to find it

HP/SP items can't be purchased anywhere, they can only be found as "chapter end" prizes, or more commonly, from purifying "dark portals" in stages
Most stages have six dark portals that can spawn enemies given turns; you can "purify"(get rid of) the dark portals, and there's a % chance that upon purification, an item will be obtained

I've acquired 7/8 consumable HP/SP items via purifying dark portals, all of those multiple times
But that last SP-healing item, the Elixshroom, I swear it doesn't exist

Drop tables appear to exist in game (weapons have Ranks in the shops, for example) but since we can't buy HP/SP items, can't confirm what rank it is
Its Hp-healing equivalent the Elixir Candy, I've acquired a number of times (maybe a dozen), each time in "endgame" areas (the final story dungeon, optional endgame training dungeon, post game boss stages that have portals in them)
But I've never found an Elixshroom

(Cont)

One Steam user claims to have received one from the story mode's Chapter 10's Good Ending; I have a separate save there right before clearing the chapter, getting the Good Ending every time, with no success

It could always just be that I'm failing the RNG gods at every turn, but it's been so many attempts now, and no one able to concretely say "it's this way" and provide proof, that I'm starting to suspect I'm not pursuing it the right way

Plus it's old game, no one cares enough about it to confirm the method

I was thinking maybe someone could isolate it in the code (or however that's fine - I have no clue) and definitively pin down the method to acquire it

If it really is just (purifying endgame portals) or (reloading Ch10 GoodEnd forever), it'd be great to know
>>
>>10960631
I'd probably look at the save file. Assuming you are emulating the game, you could open the save file and search for suspicious chunks of memory and through trial and error, change the data and see if you can identify the inventory in the save file, then go through each value for item type and see what you can find. Just be aware that there may be checksums trying to protect the data from being altered, so you may have to maintain the checksum value by countering any chages with complementary changes. So maybe you have to add 1 to a value, then subtract 1 from another byte to compensate. But you'd have to experiment to find out how the game does things.
Remember, if it's in the game it has to be represented in the data some how.

https://gbatemp.net/threads/psp-la-pucelle-ragnarok-translation.320662/page-55
These tools might be useful, or someone who posted in that thread.

Personally, I think the item is simply not obtainable legitimately, possibly unimplemented/broken and thus purposefully removed from the final release. Alternatively, the devs could have forgotten to add it to the drop tables, but it should've been fixed in the later releases then.
I can look into the PSP version to check how the loot is generated and why the algo doesn't reach/skips over the shroom, but I'll need saves in different stages/missions right before the item(s) drop(s). I don't think it's worth the effort though, because the end result will be a cheat anyway, and it's far easier to hack the item into the inventory than mess with the game logic in the disassembler.

Basically, you make a savestate right before the item spawns in your inventory/reward list/etc., find the address where it lands in memory, load the savestate, find the code writes the item in there, trace back the code to find where it decides which item to write, find where your shroom is at that point in time and figure out why the code doesn't take it from there (if it even can).
You need Cheat Engine for the memory searches and PPSSPP's disassembler to set breakpoints, first on memory which is written, then on code/function which writes it, then on functions which decide what will be written.

The original version was never finished, but the source code got leaked. The current "rainbowdev" builds are the result of a group of Redditors taking that source code and making it their identity for the last ~8 years.

Aside from games legally released on the system, what Visual Novels are available to me on the 3DS and PSP (original)?

I've heard of people playing DDLC, pc98 games and even tsukihime on there. I've already got a modded 3DS but it's the original model, not the "new" or "XL" and I think I have a moddable PSP

Also, this doesn't have anything to do with modding but does anyone know some games for either of those systems that have dual language support? e.g. you can press a button and switch from english to japanese and vice versa? That would be cool too.

Is there any way of knowing if decompiled code is at all similar to the original source code of a game? I don't know anything about coding, the question popped into my head.

If it recompiles 1:1, the source must be identical in meaning. Coding style will obviously be different because the only way to get the original source of something is when it's leaked. Otherwise you're talking archaeology, looking at contemporary projects and screenshots making guesses and trying to replicate exactly how the programmers would have done it with the tools available

I'm not sure about the 3DS, but there's a similar converter for the DS. I'm pretty sure that it will look horrible on a 3DS, though.

oh nice that's pretty much exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for

How come? I'm able to play ds games on the 3ds and it looks relatively normal

It doesn't have a name. Just kicks you into the level.

3DS's fucked up scaling blurries DS games like you wouldn't believe. While it's tolerable with 3D games, 2D games suffer horribly, text-heavy games in particular, and god forbid kanji-heavy games. You can disable scaling and play in native DS res, but the screen will be tiny and the readability will suffer either way.

Appreciate you guys. I have plans for a few more things to post here soon. I take patching requests, too, speaking of which.

Hmm. Truth be told, I've never played a single SMW hack because there are just too many to sift through. If you have a few that you would consider the absolute best I'd be interested. Other than that, I think there are some fairly recent Mario 64 hacks that were well-received. Cursed Mirror? Monstrous Manor? And then those two reminded me that I'm pretty sure there are actually Luigi's Mansion hacks, but the last time I looked into it they were buried behind Discord paywalls of all things. Those might be beyond the scope of the thread anyway. And of course all of these hinge on time, availability, and willingness. In the meantime, I'll try to get to that Pokémon TCG hack soon. I remember having just as much fun with the original as I did with the main games. Same with Pokémon Pinball.

Alas, you linked to SMW2, and the SMW page has an extensive list that is a bit daunting. That's why I was looking for a smaller selection of personal favorites.

>Monstrous Manor
This shit is so good. I don't even like Luigi's Mansion and it's still blowing me away. I'm especially impressed by the tone staying on point while managing to be mysterious. Usually it's either "Bowser kidnaps Peach, take 1244" or awkward fanfic lore bullshit like Beyond the Cursed Mirror

/v/orld was good. Super Mario for Lost Players is a standout if you can deal with the SMB1 physics and jokes. Also the hack just called "My QLDC Level" is unironically exceptional
