Is this the ultimate reto console?

>amazing 240p support
>plays everything before 2000
>tons of controller options
>cheap component cables with both 16:9 ad 4:3 support
>native gamecube support
>>
>>10917252
yes
>>
>>10917252
Wii and PSP were certainly good options in the 2000's and maybe early 2010's, but we have much better options nowadays. For CRT you have RetroPi and MiSTer. For HDMI you can just use any TV stick (preferably a good one like Shield TV) and play at double or quadruple resolution for 3D games. For handhelds we have an entire general for that which are imo better options than the PSP.

Wii is better than a pi for 240p output, especially as a “just works” solution
>>
if me, a zoomer, can remember playing it growing up, then it's not retro. it's that simple.
>>

That's an interesting perspective but that's not what the rules say.

Discussing Wii as a console and its games is different from discussing a hacked Wii as an emulation device

Having to hookup/ attach all your controllers to that little dildo remote is a major flaw. If I didn’t have my Gamecube SC2 fight stick then I wouldn’t bother playing my Wii at all. The classic controllers feel like cheap garbage
>>
>>10917252
It's okay but some of the emulators are unstable, and of course the latency isn't the best thing on earth anymore. Of course 5th gen and arcade are also spotty at best. If up to 4th gen, GBA, and the native platforms it supports are your thing, sure. It's no VRR/transcoder + runahead setup on a proper PC.

you can boost gc games resolution, you can use the mini console controller with the wiimote, there's manuals built-in for every VC game. Wii is so fucking GOATED, having to tether a controller to the wiimote is pretty gay though. Mine belong to some mulattos before, I've got to give this thing a deep clean I can see the cheeto dust in the wiimote crevice.

TODAY I WILL REMIND THEM:
You may use SNES or NES mini controllers with your wii since they use a nunchuck connection.
>>
>>10918207
You still have to use the dildo which is annoying. I use Raphnet CC -> GC adapter to avoid that when I want to use my mini NES controller for NES/SMS/PCE
>>
>>10918207
Use the GC ports and put the wiimote in a drawer for good.
>>

I use those, and the Classic Controller revision for PSX emulation. I also treated myself to a Raphnet adapter so I can use a Genesis controller

It does play Sega CD; I played Snatcher thanks to Wii emulation on my CRT in crisp 240p a few years ago. I recall that you have to download a bios file for Sega CD games to work and put it in the same directory on the SD card though?

Sega CD has worked fine forever. I played through Snatcher and Lunar 1 like a decade ago on it. PS1 emulation sucked until like 2 or 3 years ago but now it's almost perfect. Some people have complained about SNES emulation having slight input lag or the FX games not running full speed, but there's SNES 9x RX now that fixes it.

What do I use to emulate Sega 32x?
>>
The Wii VC is cool. A few tips:

- The component cable will always output 480p or 480i, you need to use a scart or similar cable for 240p.
- If using a pal Wii, mod it to change it to NTSC or all the VC titles will play at 50hz with black bars.
>>
>>10921490
Wii VC sucks, just use homebrew emulators for everything except N64
>>
Using Fast Forward on WiiStation is such a quality of life improvement when running 240p on a CRT TV. It just retired my PS1 on most games. I can't bear the lost time on thousand doors in RE games.
>>
>>10917352
Wii is better because millions of people already have a wii. Convenience is absolutely a factor.
If you are hardcore into emulation sure spend the money but for the vast majority of people who just emulate occasionally Wii is the best.
>>

>But if you want to play DK64 you need a Wii U instead

Is it because people are running Retroarch on Wii?
>>
>>10921571
WiiSX got rebooted roughly 2-3 years ago thanks lightrec, which allowed it to run PCSX ReARMed and thus achieve better compatibility and performance. WiiStation started as a fork of old WiiSX pre-lightrec, but now it incorporates it too. Currently only WiiStation supports 240p, so that's your best choice for CRT TVs, but some clueless idiots like SaulFabre kept updating it on his own and more recent versions of it introduced jittering. There's also this current issue: https://github.com/xjsxjs197/WiiSXRX_2022/issues/223

>Is it because people are running Retroarch on Wii?
No. RetroArch is only worth using on Wii for fast/lightweight emulators that are good and not available standalone, such as Gambatte, Beetle PCE FAST, FCEUmm/Nestopia UE, PicoDrive, gbSP, etc.

Emulation on Wii with a CRT TV is pretty cool, but I suggest you to research a bit or ask away around /vr/. E.g. Genesis Plus GX still gets updated in 2024 on Wii, but most idiots use the version from 2015 still.

>>
>>10921476
I used retroarch, dunno the core name

But hey, since the Wii can clearly emulate dual SH2's full speed, Saturn must be a possibility!
>>
>>10921608
Sucks because latest wiistatiom introduced sound interpolation to make games sound better which really helps, but yeah they broke it recently with the stutter.
>>
>>10921804
>>10921608

Jittering/stuttering how? On the sound or the graphics?
>>
>>10921753
>>10921608
>>10919623
>>10918496

We are gonna set up straight, PS1 emulation on Wii is gettin there but there's still issues, indeed, Wiistation 3.0 seems to be the last truly stable version, has better compatibility, but sadly lacks sound interpolation and has that one scanline issue, some games like SOTN had a micro stutter, and CHD crashing aint fixed (you can use PBP which runs fine).

Then SaulFabre fucked it all up, even if there's more games compatible, but the stutter is unbearable now, and doesnt seem to be fixed anytime soon.

On the plus side, Wiistation is the only one that can run Tekken 3 at fullspeed (but not at smooth framerate) thanks to Interleaced mode, which WiiSX still doesnt have, and some games like DoA (theres a ps1 port) also run worse on WiiSX, this latter emulator doesnt seem to be interested into gettin 240p or Bilinear disabling atm, one good thing tough is that WiiSX has fixed the graphical garbage glitches during screen switchin which Wiistation still has.

So yeah shit is whacked, its still all over the place, better then N64 tough
>>
>>10921813
Latest 3 builds of Wiistation got fucked with some awful stutter/jitter that happens when playin, doesnt had to do with speed, but its really bad.
>>
>>10917252
Wii U does all of that whilst also having HDMI-out, and the ability to properly emulate DS games (gamepad touch screen works as the touch screen when playing DS titles).
>>
>>10922302
WiiU has fucked up video output for vWii and does not support 240p. DS through VC injects is nice though limited; looking forward to DraStic finally becoming open source and getting ported to every system under the sun.
>>
>>10922313
vWii is just a UI shell, it runs Wii games natively in the same way Wii runs GCN (WiiU also runs GCN games natively through vWii if you trick the system into thinking they're Wii games). 480p is an objective upgrade over 240p.
>>
>>10922331
Wii and GameCube can also do 480p, so I don't know what your point is. And yes, I know you can play GameCube games on a WiiU through homebrew, that wasn't the point either. The point is that WiiU's Wii Mode looks like garbage, example: https://twitter.com/MarcDWyz/status/1449880337182597123

That's the whole point that is being argued on this very thread. The Wii is the last console to be able to output in 240p, thus why it is recommended for playing old consoles on CRT TVs. You can pretty much get the same image quality thanks to it.

>>10922374
DraStic is excellent and incredibly efficient, even faster than PCSX ReARMED and Snes9x. If someone bothers to write a PowerPC recompiler once it gets open sourced, it will work full speed on both Wii and WiiU. It's also very viable on Vita.

I got an adapter from Raphtech 10 years ago gamecube male to SNES female, so I can plug straight in with an original wired SNES.

sadly though I'm not sure he creates them anymore. I reached out a while back about getting a 9-pin adapter for hooking up my mega drive controllers too, but never heard back

My only issue is that I can't use my own controllers so I'm forced to use the shitty wiimote or a Gamecube controller for my emulators. All I want is to use my 8bitdo for SNES.
>>
>>10929348
There's a competitor to 8BitDo that makes a GCN bluetooth adapter that has worked really well with my DualSense, if your 8bitdo controller has normal bluetooth sync it should work nicely.
>>
>>10929354
Sounds cool, but I have the wired SN30. Still, I could still consider using it for my DualSense; better than using the gamecube controller.

No. Not sure why he'd think that, since the Wii has the same output modes as the GameCube anyway.
The one benefit is that GameCube games run better on the Wii through Nintendont. Rogue Squadron II is an especially noticeable example.

Zoomers are rapidly approaching thirty. Soon you will also be retro.
>>
>>10930268
It's more about the feeling and shape than what is shilled or not. 8bitdo has controllers that are basically reskinned SNES controllers. The other option is using an SNES Classic controller, but no one sells them on their own, you gotta get the console too.

You also need a Wiimote if you want to use the Wii Classic Controller iirc?
>>
>>10931539
It's what I use. It's solid but feels a bit light.
The dpad is pretty good but doesn't quite feel as good as a snes dpad. But it works and the handles make it feel better than the standard wii classic controller for sure.
I give it 7.75 out of 10 for playing old games.

>>10931579
Yes
>>
Is the Wii Classic Controller really that bad? I want to use it mostly for SNES.
>>
>>10932006
No, I actually think it's better than the SNES controller it's more ergonomic than the SNES controller, the back is rounded and fits nice in your hand, and the dpad is smooth.
>>
>>10932006
It's a great controller, the only downside is that you need a Wiimote to connect it to. It's a BIG downside.
That said, you can get around it with an adapter. Nintendont and RetroArch both support Mayflash Classic to USB adapters (PC052 and PC045, specifically).

The problem is that USB HID support is program specific. So it's not going to work outside of those two.
For a system-wide solution, you'd need something like fakemote. But that only supports PS3 and PS4 controllers.
>>
>>10930921
The youngest zoomers are still not legally allowed to post here.
>>
>>10932006
It's fine, the classic pro is just comfier though
>>
>>10931619
Sounds pretty good then. How would you compare it to the GameCube controller?
>>
>>10933654
If you are mainly using the sticks then I'd go with the GC controller. The sticks are perfectly fine on the classic I just never liked that style of stick placement.
If you are mainly using the dpad go with classic, since the GC dpad is complete garbage for anything but menuing.
Personally I'd want both, since you would obviously want a GC controller for emulating GC games on a wii, but the classic/pro is better for emulating retro snes games and stuff
>>
>>10933747
Thanks anon. I didn't know the GC dpad is that bad. Do you think having just the classic pro would be enough for an occasional GC game? It should work with Nintendont
>>
>>10933931
Yeah, there's only two problems:
1. The Classic Controller Pro doesn't have analogue L and R buttons (the original Classic Controller does, though).
2. The insufferable cunts who made Nintendont don't let you manually remap the buttons to your liking, including unmapping the Home button which CLOSES THE GAME WITHOUT PROMPT. It's extremely easy to hit by accident since it's right next to +, and I've accidentally hit it countless times (NOT ONCE on purpose).
>>
>>10922367
>What makes a console support 240p?
Must be by design. The OG Xbox doesn't even output 240p, but the Wii was released 5-years later and will do it even with composite cables.
>>
>>10931539
It's perfect. This is the exact controlled I used to play games like Chrono Trigger and Super Metroid via Wii emulation on my CRT TV a couple years ago.
>>
>>10931539
Wii controllers are all flimsy garbage
>>
>>10934075
They don't feel like they are made out of Nintendium like many other nintendo controllers, but my wii classic controller is still working perfectly after a decade of semi regular use.
The plastic and the weight makes them feel cheap but they are sturdy.
>>
>>10933939
Holy shit hahaha, I think I'll go for the GameCube controller after all. I wish it wasn't such a clusterfuck
>>
>>10934136
I wouldn't want to play GC games without a GC controller anyway.
But unless you like playing retro games with a control stick classic is superior for anything that mainly uses a dpad.
Personally I've never had the problem of hitting the home button by accident since the + and - buttons are raised while home in sunken. But maybe I'm just supremely skilled at button pressing.
>>
>>10917252

If you're blowing cash on a retro machine you might as well blow it on a steam deck and install retro arch on it. Because then you're not just playing console /vr/, but also PC /vr/ and anything faux retro on steam.
Then you can both play in hand-held, or plug in a USB-c hub and use it as a retro couch console, or legit desktop.

Shaders are fine, I feel like /vr/ frequently gets bogged down on all this weird hardware shit instead of actually playing games. Which, again, the Deck does great just from virtue of being a midrange PC with a screen and controls built in.
But if you're not going the money route, absolutely yeah just getting a Wii from goodwill and popping an SD card in is defo the way to go. Load that shit up and go nuts
>>
>>10917252
being the nerd I am after I saw this thread I hooked my wii back up to scart pvm, and I've got to say after learning about rgbpi, and pi2scart, I do not reccomend the wii unless you're an absolute poorfag, A lot of the VC games have had gay darkening and changes done to them to keep people from having seizures, dicking around with the wii mote is annoying, so is having to modify it to work around using the default system menu. The arcade VC releases are no where near the right speed, and were probably only impressive when the wii was current. tbqh the appeal of being able to use good quality MAME emulation (yes, the wii has mame, but GL it can pretty much only handle pre 90s titles) and my mayflash stick or even a bluetooth 8bitdoodoo if I want to, is far far more appealing.
>>
to tag onto my former post, I do reccomend it if your main focus is game cubes, and then you can play the wii and VC libraries/ emulators as a bonus. Infact, I don't recommend owning a gamecube at all.

You can still find good stuff at Goodwill if you're not fucking retarded and go to the ones in rural towns. There isn't a store policy that states they HAVE to send high ticket items to their ebay fulfillment stores because that would mean that the downies, subhumans, and elderly would have to actually be able to recognize something on sight. Stop going to the ones in big cities where the Gen Xers and older Millennials showed up frequently enough for the actual human beings forced to work at the Goodwill figured out what was expensive.
>>
>>10935539
Does Retroarch on a Steam Deck actually output 240p? People here kept telling me to get a Wii because of the native 240p, but I own both now.
>>
>>10935430
That doesn't answer the question, chief
>>
>>10936404
No, it wasn't. The original Wiimotes could be unresponsive and inaccurate as fuck. That's why the stereotypical example of someone trying to select something on the Wii's main menu is the little hand cursor shaking wildly and disappearing.

They basically put out the 0.8 model of the controller because that was good enough for launch, but then had to find a way to release the completed, functional version of the controller later. That's why it started off as a little cube you connected to the bottom of the Wiimote, and then built straight into the actual Wiimote itself once stock of the original models dwindled.
>>
Is this thread basically just retards pretending CRT displays and analog cables don't exist so they can say,

A finite supply can be grossly overvalued and be subject to speculative scammery, hell beanie babies were limited runs and look how that went

If you keep a look out, you may find one that looks like new. I bought my first Wii about two weeks ago, it looks like someone bought it, played it for a couple hours and never booted it up again. The glossy finish on the console has some light scratches, probably from someone wiping the dust from time to time, but the wiimotes and their sillicone sleeves look brand new. The only problems were leaked batteries in one of the remotes (manufactured 2009 lmao), but only one terminal has a small corrosion mark left after I cleaned it

The Wii will probably become "retro" (expensive) in the general public's view soon, but there are still tons of people selling these for relatively cheap. The biggest problem is finding one in good condition, tons of them were wrecked by kids. And you do want one in good condition, disassembling these, even just to clean up cheeto dust, is painful
>>
Hacking a Wii was fun, but no, it is not the ultimate anything. Having to boot up with the wiimote (having to use this thing for anything at all is awful) is annoying. It also does not run 16bit games perfectly. Close, but not as good as the real thing. There is slight stutter that is not there on a real SNES.
>>
>>10939659
>And you do want one in good condition, disassembling these, even just to clean up cheeto dust, is painful
The ultimate redpill in retro is learning to have fun with this kind of thing. You get to learn some new skills along the way once you get into self-maintenance and self-repair.
>>
>>10939741
I get where you're coming from, but whoever designed the Wii is legitimately insane. Disassembly is not difficult, it's just time consuming and tedious. If you learn something along the way, it's patience

just putting this out there, because for some reason the tranny jannies deleted a thread asking how to use a wii without a wiimote. Use priiloader, you can hold start and reset to boot into the priiloader menu anytime you want, and in that menu you can set it to boot into the homebrew channel, from the homebrew channel you can go to usbloader gx, and through usbloader gx you can create an emunand so you can run VC titles/gc/wii all from usbloader using a GC controller. Tranny jannies I spit in your face.

There's no logic in the "retro gaming" market. Pretty sure the only reasons to use a GameCube over a Wii are:

>Game Boy player (why would you want to play handheld games on a TV)
>Digital component cables (why would you want to pay 300 USD for a marginal visual improvement)

The Wii is a much better console to own, but it's not "retro" just yet, so get one while you can
