/fgt/ daily reminder (courtesy by anon): one stop per decade is (generally) bullshit
>negative film ages better than positive
>black and white better than color
>slow films better than fast
>storage conditions (dry/cool) matter more than years
>Negative film is shot 1 or 2 stops overexposed and then PULLED in development so that you build more density in the exposure and develop less such that the fog is limited
>slide/positive film is shot at box speed or overexposed and pulled.
>if you home develop you can also use benzotriazole as a restrainer for the the first developer in E6 process

i heard some like the tones for color better, I don't understand because to my eyes they always have the kind of cold desaturation that I'm not a fan of. But then again, I've only seen Fuji slide films.

Another reason is that they may be cheap *sometimes*. I have a lab near my house that is selling a shitton of Velvia 100F for dirt cheap. It's only slightly expired and was cool stored.
>>
>>4313348
>what is the point of slide film these days?
it's fucking gorgeous
the colors are often more saturated, they're cool to look at, you can project them etc.
having a little picture that is the actual film you used and that you can see the fucking picture with beautiful vivid colours is amazing, especially for medium format
>>4313373
>I don't understand because to my eyes they always have the kind of cold desaturation that I'm not a fan of
they look better in projections because the warm light tone makes up for it
You can also use a correspondent filter when digitizing the positives so that you see them with the colors they're supposed to have when using a projector

No dipshit, a thread on imageboard "reaches its limit" when you can no longer post images in it, or when it gets to page 10 and is about to archive. If you weren't a tourist here you would have known that.
Protip: you don't get karma here for being "first".

Rollei 400 is actually a 200 speed film as far as I'm concerned. And every roll I've shot has a has manufacturing defects, like pinholes and backing paper marks on new film. Not worth the effort, Retr 80S uber alles.

>>
>>4313546
Why would you want to fix it? that looks very cool.

I get this issue with one of my dslrs sometimes when I shoot it at maximum shutter speed. I think it's the shutter not moving as fast as it should and it catches it in the frame, this only happens in portrait like your photos, I suspect that in the horizontal orientation gravity is helping

>>

use the flash if possible. get a close subject if possible. these were not made for infinity focusing. make sure the subject is about 2m away to get the best results. even doing this ur gonna get a lot of bad exposures and missed focus/motion blur but it will help a lot. dont try to use it like a phone or digi cam
>>
>>4313566
thanks thats pretty solid advice
i kind of expected this to be more of an up-close camera so i think after leaving to the raceway it'll mostly be used for interior shots of cars and stuff

i dont mind some blurriness in film, it adds a nice nostalgic and candid vibe to the pictures

/p/, I bought a new lens for my little big boy, the Mamiya RB67
I have a 127mm, and was intending to buy the 90mm because it's equivalent to a 45mm lens in 35mm format, and I'm used to shooting with 50mm and 40mm in smol format
Went for a walk with a couple of friends the other day and a friend of mine lent me his Sekor-C 65mm (roughly 32mm in 35mm format) and it blew my mind
It was exactly what I was looking for
I'm glad I got to try it before making the purchase
I thought 65mm would be way too wide for me
That's it, /p/
I'm hyped
Can't wait for it to arrive and shoot a roll with it

got a minolta maxxum 5 a couple days ago, shutter and everything seems to work fine. only thing is that the metering seems way off. picrel was metered for 1/120 at f/8 on 200iso in camera. light meter app said the shot should be 1/400 but that seems way too fast. I can normally shoot in broad daylight like this at least at 1/90 on f/16 so what gives?

Some other dude that posted here for awhile had one and the images were beautiful. I'd like to get one eventually but the glass is prohibitively expensive.

Aren't they the cheapest medium format optics with autofocus, second only to first generation Mamiya?
>>
>>4313841
Probably and there are some cheap lenses for the system, but all of the good stuff is still like $2k each, which is just more than I can afford. It might be cheap for medium format, but it's still expensive

What flash do I buy for mixed era camera use? I have a 320EX that came bundled with my DSLR and I never use it because it has no controls other than the compensation the digital camera has in the menu so the second you aren't blasting it straight on into someone's eyeballs it has no fucking idea what its supposed to be doing and completely botches the exposure. I want something that can work on modern cameras (TTL?) but also old film shit that only has the one or two pins on the hotshoe, or no pin just PC sync cable so that I can use it with a Y cable with my light meter. That apparently can give me percent of flash contribution AND tell me the settings to shoot at for correct exposure AND stack on like 100 flashes in parallel, which is pretty fuckin wild as far as I'm concerned.

If you’d learn the sunny 16 rule you wouldn’t have to rely on two different systems to meter. I remember when I wet behind the ears I’d have to carry my meter around with me all the time which was a chore. I’ve read too that light meters only meter for grey, so you have to push a stop above what your meter is telling you anyways. Why live like that? Liberate yourself.

Did you fuck with the curves before scanning? Because it looks like someone fucked with the curves here and just looks awful in general. Try scanning again with all adjustments at 0, in almost all cases you should be doing that in post anyway.
If it still looks like this (flat muddy shit), then dial down master exposure by 0.5 EV and see what happens (or dial it up if your software is retarded, since you're scanning negative). You may recover some of those clipped highlights, and even make shadows look like shadows.
But it could also be down to your scanner's D-max, if it's shit then you can't unshit it, the best you can do is make two scans 2 EV apart and merge them with some HDR software.

> it looks like a pixelated blob of white
because it is
>In this photo there is an over exposed spot that doesnt seem to gradient from gray to white
that's from scanning, or from your editing and it's clipping the highlights
Dynamic range can only do so much, even in digital
You can rescan it in a way it's metered for these dark spots in the negative and then edit both images together, or if you're using a DSLR setup you can shoot HDR images to get the darkest spots and still have an overall balanced image
Chance is you're probably clipping your highlights when editing, though
Get the raw files and check the histogram

You're not 14, stop being retarded
Asking if someone is "based" is asking permission to appreciate stuff, or not even getting to know it if some random person online tells you he's >not based
It's childish. Submissive. It's limiting.
If you have to search for approval on whether you should like a photographer's work or not, if you can't decide on even the most basic of things, how do you expect to make any decent photo?

I'm guessing it's a digital print? I remember asking if you ever tried printing aero. Happy to see you got a nice piece of physical art to enjoy!

if it's the right color or at least close to it it'll be good enough
just compensate accordingly and take into consideration that you're putting something that's not as clear as good quality glass

Pushing/pulling allows for contrast control when using the zone system. Not really applicable for 35mm film rolls where you shoot a variety of subjects, but it can be an invaluable tool when processing important sheet film, individually or in small batches.

Have you heard "expose for the shadows, develop for the highlights" before?

you're not gonna ask them to "correct your exposure" arbitrarily like you're talking
You won't shoot your film at ISO 200 and then ask them to develop like 400 or at 100 or else it'll just come out overexposed or underexposed, respectively
Pushing/pulling is just a tool that is at your disposal, that's it
Like the other guy said you might want to push expired film so that you'll get usable results
You can push to intentionally get more contrast, or pull to get a flatter image and more shadow detail

>>4314230
>What's the downside to doing this?
In theory you'll get grainier images, but depending on the film it's barely noticeable or not enough to bother (at least me)
It tends to work well with b&w film, while with color it can vary greatly depending on the film stock

but you can push/pull if you ACCIDENTALLY forgot to set the iso to box speed and still want to dev the roll to be usable instead of under/overexposed. but there's side effects with that.

but you can INTENTIONALLY under/overexpose your film and push/pull in development if you want your photos to exhibit those side effects on purpose.

Reread the advice he wrote, my response and then your response to me and tell me if your response makes sense. Telling someone to underexpose expired film and then pushing it to compensate for that underexposure will only make the expired film even more grainy. Unless I misunderstood what he said but I'm certain I didn't. Yeah if you don't have the light you should push film and get the shot or if your camera has a maximum speed of 1/400 and it's bright you can always pull film but telling someone to shoot a stop faster and push to compensate for that stop on expired film is shit advice.

I think the other guy wrote in a very confusing manner, but I think I got it
They're talking about two different situations:
>First situation
Expired film: you can pull expired film (rate it at a lower ISO than box speed)
>Second situation, completely unrelated
If you want to shoot faster than box speed, like shooting a 200 iso film as 400 iso
You'll meter it as 400 and then also develop it as 400

>Portra 800 @ 50 ISO, pulled twice in dev
I don't get what you mean by "pulled twice in dev", by the way

For 35mm photography it was mainly used when the speed wasn't available. Another anon gave an example. You've got a roll of ISO 200 but you need to shoot at ISO 400. Press photographers did this all the time, mostly pushed.

Underdeveloping to compensate for overexposing, cause overexposing film and then developing it regularly isn't actually going to do anything. The pulling happens in the developing process, it's shorter dev times and also lower temp basically the inverse you'd do for +1 and +2 you'd do for -1 and -2.

>In fact Kappa Alpha has a previous history of hazing at A&M.; In 1997 member Jonathan Culpepper was indicted for misdemeanor hazing after he gave sophomore pledge John Warren a super wedgie.

Warren was unable to walk after the incident and days later went to the hospital to undergo surgery where doctors had to remove one of his testicles.

Hello frens. I bought myself an Olympus OM-1 a few years ago and went through one roll of film no problems, but the next two that I used ended up completely blank (including a roll I used on holiday to Paris) I have no idea what the problem could be because I haven't dropped the camera, I'm certain the film was sin correctly, and I don't have a camera shop near me that can have a look at it. Any ideas what could be wrong?
>>
>>4314409
Olympus film spools wear out and slip and have on every om shitstem film slr ive had
Its possible the film just never ran through the camera

Isn't paris a shithole now?

Was the winding resistance weird? Ideally you should CLA a camera used for important things.
>>
>>4314410
How would I know if that happened? I haven't actually used the thing in two years, I should say, so my memory of even how to work it is fuzzy. I do remember having to roll the film though, it was at the end of the roll I'm almost certain.
>>
>>4314412
>Isn't paris a shithole now
The good parts of Paris are REALLY good, but the bad parts are complete dogshit. It's well worth visiting for the museums and such, though.
>Was the winding resistance weird?
Didn't see this until after I posted >>4314413 sorry
but as I said, it's been two years since I've used it and I can't really remember. I think as far as I know everything was completely fine, or at least felt fine at the time.
>Ideally you should CLA a camera used for important things.
See I had been using it shortly before and so got lazy, it was also going to be either this or my Sony A600 and I thought film would look nicer so big mistake there. I just bought 3 more rolls of Kodak Gold 200, and I'm a bit afraid of using it. I have plenty of other cameras, despite being fairly inexperienced (long story) though, but I spent 35 euro on new film I'd like to use it on my best camera. I'll probably just have to throw it in some shop the next chance I get because the problem is very vague.
>>
>>4314316
oh you're talking about a variety of subjects across the same strip
ok, makes sense now
>>
>>4314414
You have to use your ear and listen to hear if the film is spooling. If you hear the film moving inside the camera then you pay attention to the resistance of the cocking lever.

Sounds like a more extreme version of what's happening in SF... I went to paris 15 years ago, and had a great time trying escargot and smoking a ton if cigarettes. There were just gypsies trying to scam you.

If I went back to euroland again I would tour the wine countries, and avoid the cities altogether.

If only I had shown examples and listed reasons with the post where I stated I shot Portra 800 @ 50, -2.

Pulling, provided you compensate the exposure properly, reduces contrast and some people believe it also reduces grain.

Pushing, let's you use the film for darker scenes, where you compensate for the lack of light with increased development time and temperature at the cost of more contrast and often times more defined grain.

I avoided all the gypsies, a lot of African lads trying to sell you beer around the Eiffel Tower though, but they weren't pushy or aggressive. Everting around the Seine seemed very nice. It would be a great place to live if you were rich.

>If I went back to euroland again I would tour the wine countries, and avoid the cities altogether.
A lot of good countryside in Europe thankfully, a lot of nice little cities too without too many tourists. Although they might be a bit boring if you stay more than a weekend. South, Southwest England is very nice, and It's actually become a great place to grow wine, funnily enough. Bath is a great little city built around the Roman Baths there. Iceland is great but very boring after a few days. Vienna is a gorgeous city, even if it is filled with tourists.

I probably asked this before, but many years ago I sent a roll of Fuji 200 in to get developed from a guy id had been going to often, and when I got the negatives back they were sticky and smelled like vinegar and the negatives had a green mask instead of orange. The guy didnt know how i happened but gave me two free rolls to make up for it.
Over time the negatives keep getting worse, but im just wondering wtf happened? was it dev'd in E6 by accident or something?

Because it's fun. Also If you like hicon film with lots of grain- something really crunchy and cooked. It's not for everyone.

I was working on an indie feature. We couldn't afford enough lights for this large space we were renting and we had to be lowkey about our filming (it was a Mausoleum). For most of the shots we used whatever ambient light was available- we shot at the lowest f stop available on trix 200 and asked the lab to push to 800. iso 800 would have assured we got at least some visible images, and we did. We got great footage out of it.

I fuckin hate KUM JAPAN with their descriptionless fucking listings argh
>>
>>4314586
It was very unprofessional, but not for the reasons you stated. It was an avant-garde passion project, and we were shooting for free at a location that normally charged a $10k day rate. We shot with no insurance and didn't follow any child actor labor laws because they were very close family friends. As far as lighting goes everything was by the books. Our cinematographer is boyscout.

I don't remember the particulars, but I believe we metered around f.1-f.2 or somewhere abouts. And anywhere the light dropped off at theoretically would have appeared black. We metered again for 800 and got a lot more visibility, but not as much as we would have liked for such a beautiful location. In the end the final results everything was exposed perfectly, and objects that were supposed to drop off into blackness even at 800iso appeared lit.

>>
>>4314614
It's been about 75/25 on Japanese sellers for me. Usually it's exactly as described with no issues other times the listing was misleading at best. Usually though if you contact them they are very willing to approve a return or partial refund if it's fucked up.
>>

I bought an rts3 body from Japan, and it was completely broken, so they just gsve me a full refund without shipping it back. Pretty nice.
>>
>>4314626
I've been told before that a lot of the ebay listings are actually like arbitrage listings from Japanese auction sites and most of the people don't actually have the product they are selling. It's all in a warehouse which I can say is anecdotally true. Every time I have asked about specific details or more photos they usually respond that it's in storage or a warehouse not immediately accessible to them. So I think most of them don't know if the listing is accurate or not.
>>
>>4314629
That's my exact experience with a variety of things I've purchased. They have always been super helpful if a listing is wrong.

Nice! I'm stuck with 8x10 and 35mm only for the time being.

Are you doing fiber paper yet?
One thing I didn't realize at first was how much nicer glossy paper is for printing. I started with matte rc, but quickly switched over to glossy fiber.
You get much deeper blacks with it, and glossy fiber paper is nothing like the glassy plastic "1 hr print and develop" department store type glossy paper. It's really nice.
>>
>>4314759
>Are you doing fiber paper yet?
Yes, ilford warmtone gloss and fomabrom variant 111 are great. RC Glossy sucks though, I found pearl much nicer. RC Glossy is completely incomparable to FB Glossy, it feels really cheap (imo).
>>
>>4314765
Agreed, I moved off all rc paper after I finished off like 100 prints. It all feels cheap to good fiber.

Well it looks like they've gone out of business, The lab has been closed for a month and no one is answering my phone calls.i go out of my way to drive past it every day. Nothing.

Some of those were street portraits and 3 rolls were from a trip to Ukraine. FUCK!

I think im gone with film for a while. This is just such a gut punch.

I mounted my 890mm lens onto a sinar plate, and cut the hole big. It barely fit. This is the camera focused at infinity.

Note the external sinar shutter. Very cool thing.

I'll be making some wetplates today using this setup to start with. I have a second tripod I'll be using as well...

Is there such a thing as “test rolls” sold commercially? Like just a roll of basic 35mm with enough roll for 10 shots or something like that, just to test new cameras and lenses and the like? Or is bulk loading it yourself the only way?

I was, I'm just amused by the film's performance. I don't drive up there unless absolutely necessary, so I don't get to shoot in such conditions often.
I actually kind of like it in good daylight, it delivers on the "retro color stock look" promise. Only the grain the size of Tmax pushed to 12800 in Rodinal is something to get used to.
Same roll and same ISO 200, developed normally by the way.
>>
>>4314657
Love that grain. There was a some asshole on here asking why on earth anyone would push film. Fucking brain dead

Am I correct in thinking this banding/discoloration is from film curl?

Swell grain, gain texture, boost contrast instead of adding a red filter, and give a nice punchy non conventional unique look. Was all the go in the 90s. How do you think the 90s street look came about, low lighting = under exposed + push development to get that juicy grain to make it look as gritty as possible to convey a very deliberate technique to signify a sense of realism. That’s why young friend.

It was a dull day to be sure, even on phone snapshit.
Also no, it's from Horseshoe Bay, the bridge in bottom left is the Bay Bridge. Treasure Island would be just outside the frame on the left. Golden Gate is outside the frame on the right.
>>
>>4314908
ionno mang I think this is a really cool picture, idk what you're pointing at with the arrows vs without

if it's a "what I saw" vs "what was captured" then that's on you...
>>
>>4314912
Note the purple and blue lines going down the photo. You'll notice in the sky there's weird banding that I think is caused by the negative not being completely flat in the holder. At the right edge of the photo, you can also see the purple splotchy bit, I think that's also from film curl.

I'm just autistic about the details

>>
>>4314920
Yeah, just wanted to confirm I wasn't going crazy. Going to look into using masks n shit to reduce glare. I have a feeling it's because I cut my film into strips of 2 while the holder expects 3, so the open empty slot lets more light bounce around. That mixed with curled film would lead to annoying errors I think?
>>
New lab in my city has much cheaper dev and scan. Decided to try them out. Dev is pretty good but the scans were absolute ass despite using noritsu/frontier. It's so noisy, looks like shit and I had a massive band of darkness through the middle of 3 frames. Negs are perfectly clear.

Because he wanted me to. I was sympathetic for his lost film until he said that. He didn't have to mention what was on the rolls but he did and the implication is that I should care more because those weren't dumb ol' landscapes those were STREET PORTRAITS FOR GOD'S SAKE. Which is a genre of photography that is exclusively shit and only works if you're convinced that the heckin' big city is just like living in a tv show.

I'm the guy whose Olympus OM-1 was returning blanks for some reason, and I've discovered that the reason for this was because, at some point about 4 years ago, I had set it to FP mode instead of X mode which means there was literally no exposure happening because it was waiting for a Flash Bulb to light up the area. I'm just going to go ahead and award myself pic related

what would cause this magenta shit? I'm running 38.2 C as far as I can measure accurately (avg of all the lying thermometers I own), for the next rolls I'll drop it to 38.0 because as I understand it temperature issues is what causes color casts in C41 right?

I'm at work on a cinealta calibrated screen and it looks alright, yeah maybe cause it's expired stock from 2001 I could fix it a bit but no where near red. Only reason it's a shit photo is cause the subject has motion blurr. If you're going to shit on my photo at least do it right.
