GOTY edition (this may be the version on steam, not sure) utterly ruins plasma guns, but they were kinda shit even when they were good and most mods fix it. For character builds, not really either aside from swimming. There isnt a lot of point in investing in pistols, since the laser mod confers all benefits of higher skill except damage and you get that on liberty island. Incidentally, you should always reduce your pistol skill to untrained in character creation because it gives you extra points for other things and you get upgraded to trained as soon as you start the game.

Just keep in mind that weapon damage is supposed to be a grace period for not having a jam and that jams in firefights are 100% intended to happen at least once per engagement. same for malaria, it's supposed to be there to throw a wrench into firefights normally, not a penalty for not doing the pill missions. you can't actually die from malaria unless you ignore it for a very, very long time. also you run out of pills at scripted points, that's why there's no HUD or inventory marker for them so don't feel pressured to do those missions as soon as they're available if you find them boring; they can be put off for a while. also don't use assault rifles. they're all boring. silenced weapons have video game silencer syndrom and you need to pump whole magazines into people to make them work, but enemies are bad at being aware of you so you can make as much noise as you want and still be mostly undetected. and once you get the Carl G it actually has guided rockets with nearly infinite range so you can use it like a ghetto javelin to top-attack trucks. the flaregun is hella OP once you get good at hooking flares into vehicles and on missions with lots of dry grass or wood structures. the mortar is a meme

It's more primitive than the other games of course but it's perfectly designed and balanced within it's confines. There's maybe one nitpick flaw and that's that grenades are useless out side of their designated boss fight. if you don't want to be that guy, MGS2 has the best gameplay in the series. It has 2 flaws: One is that the level design is too linear, the other is that tranq guns are the worst thing to be introduced to the series right after Pokemon faggotry. If you ignore the tranq guns, MGS2 is the peak.MGS3 unfortunately has too many failed mechanics and downgrades for me to consider it the best. Enemies got dumber, balance went out the window in the players favor, and the survival aspect of the game is a complete failure amounting to nothing more than periodic menu fumbling chore with no stakes whatsoever. Camouflage is only not a total failure if you pretend you can't micromanage it and instead just pick one cammo for the general area you are in and play to it's strengths.MGS4 maybe has one of the best gameplay in a theoretical scenario where:1- the game is actually finished and there's gameplay segments to play2- the ally mechanic is ignored or removed from the game

Unlike the '69 version, where Rooster just runs across four jerkoffs taking a piss and steals their wagon, takes him 10 minutes to get back to the trading post. Bridges portrayed Rooster more slovenly and disreputable, and then the turn comes when the traveling Indian comes upon them in the wilderness, and Rooster sweeps his coat aside, you definitely get the idea he actually is a dangerous motherfucker.
