Surely there must be some interest in this board for things made before planes and machine guns. Ive seen some sword threads floating around from time to time.

Primer questions
Any period/culture your like or are autistic about?
Have you been to any museum recently and seen or photographed any cool stuff?
Do you own or collect anything or is in the process of building a kit for reenacting/living history/Larping?
>>
Anyways, here are a few roman cavalry face masks because I think they are cool

I like 19th century British guns. In my opinion it's one of the most interesting periods of firearms development because it was able to take advantage of both industrialization and old-school craftsmanship and there was plenty of money to fuel R&D. There were a lot of really interesting designs that came out back then while people were still experimenting with what worked and what didn't.

I think the Roman cavalry masked helmets are pretty cool too. I like to think that all the heavy Roman infantry and cavalry wore fully enclosed helmets and armor that covered their entire body like how plate armor did in the late medieval period.

I would guess there might be a one or few "sibling" harness to that one that share the same decoration style. But Im not really keen on armor from 16th c. and after other than some basic stuff, Im much more of a 13th-14th century guy.

It's absolutely wild that the Aztec and other Mesoamericans actually fought in/with feather mosaic coated warsuits, tunics, shields, helmets, etc.

Imagine meticulously arranging tens of thousands of iridescent feathers to form full images and patterns and then knowing it's going to get torn up

It'd be like wearing a suit of plate armor where there's an entire exterior set of accenting and reliefs made of finely sculptured/engraved glass
>>

And some less intact surviving shields

These may or may not be ceremonial rather then functional/for combat shields, though: The same Anonymous Conquistador who wrote >>61641402 says all/most of the shields brought to Europe were ceremonial, but their construction as described in research on the shields matches his description of functional ones (unless by "interwoven with cotton of double thickness", he means double layers of gambeson padding, rather then double layers of bamboo slats woven together with cotton thread as on the surviving shields) so?

Iirc the second armor from the left was made specificaly for one tournament celebrating a peace agreement between france and england, where both kings would compete with each other in combat combat, the Field of the Cloth of Gold tournament. The only part of the body that suit doesnt cover are the botton of the feet.
In the end, a last minute change on the tournament rules meant that this suit wouldnt be allowed to be used so the the third suit of armor had to be hastly assembled to be used by Henry VIII.

In a touch of irony for all the weird leather armor vs gambeson dichotomy pushed by leather armor deniers still out there, we have more extant leather armor and shields from europe than we have extant gambesons from the middle ages, which to my knowledge there are zero (0). We have a few jupons and other things that may go over armor, or things that go under armor but neither seems to provide much defence if used on their own.

To add, the bit that ended up against the rules were the locking gauntlets (which would be locked closed and thus make it near impossible for the king to drop his weapon). The rules change/clarification/ruling came in when the harness was "functionally" done, but before it had been decorated, thus the (relatively speaking) severely plain appearance. The other 1520 armour was the one made as its replacement.

Alas, at that point in his life it appears he was in decidedly poor health. Severely overweight, likely suffering from gout, with a festering leg wound that refused to heal since '36, and if the pus-filled boils hadn't quite shown up yet they soon would. He didn't live to see February of '47.

Actual "Aztec" aeshetics are a lot closer to Minoan, Roman, and even Japanese architecture and clothing depending on the specific thing in question then it is to the way pop culture usually depicts it.

The typical "Aztec" or Maya thing in games, movies, comics, etc takes more from the Maya then Aztec, but even for the Maya tends to completely make shit up and go out of it's way to present things as shitty and primitive looking as possible rather then making anything accurate.

Obviously, stuff being made dirty and pale is pretty common in historical media, but typically they still get the general aeshetic somewhat right even if the specifics are off and it's drained of color: Mesoamerican stuff in media rarely gets the architecture, clothing, or armor right even in a basic sense. The only sorta comparable thing I can think of is how media shows Viking aesthetics, but even those aren't usually as butchered

>>61668127
IIRC he did start a war or execute another king for not attending a religious festival in Tenochtitlan, but that's not necessarily him just being a dick and more because the Aztec political system didn't have much hands on administration with subject states still effectively being independent, and his predecessor did such a shit job on military campaigns it made subject states stop paying taxes and try to secede, with Ahuizotl even getting ghosted at his coronation ceremony

So him doing that on a subsequent occasion would have been him putting his foot down to present a strong image to restablish Aztec influence.

Thanks much for this effort post anon, do you have Part 2?

5 years ago, a bunch of Ytubers into history & language did an exposé into the Mexíca. It made those people far more relatable & interesting.
The image I got from middle & high school social studies was a flat, dismal fever-dream. I was distressed; how did such a culture happen?

There were certainly wild, dark-pagan aspects to those Mexíca, but with a detailed view of their history & institutions, I felt I could finally understand them, in the same way I already understood the dark portions of European paganry.
The early Aztec conversion to Christianity was also a super-interesting phase. Like the European Interwar years, or the High Renaissance.

Btw fuck the Aztecs. Typical ageing empire of arrogant assholes, throwing away armies & digging their own graves.

Not sure what you guys are implying, but it's just showing Mexica soldiers (middle) taking a captive Tlaxcalteca soldier (right) back to Tenochtitlan (presumbly), while a junior soldier-in-training is acting as a porter and carrying their supplies (left).

>>61716951
This was in a legend that also had witches and undead magical hearts. The specific incident was because Huitzilopochtli wanted to breed war and conflict and to keep the Mexica moving to eventually find the island he destined for them to turn into Tenochtitlan: The whole point behind sacrificing Achitometl's daughter/the princess of Colhuacan was that it would piss him off.

So it's not that they didn't understand it would (they knew it, but did it anyways because their god told them to, though I believe in some versions it may have been a misunderstanding?), nor was it that flaying itself was a problem (the Colhuaca did sacrifices too, it's that Achitometl thought he was offering his daughter as a political marriage, not a sacrifice)

I had a larger breakdown but I can't find it now

>Typical ageing empire of arrogant assholes, throwing away armies & digging their own graves.
Not sure what this is in reference to? Depending on how you define it, the "empire" was around for only 100-200 years. They also didn't generally just send armies into the meat grinder?

If you're referencing the idea that them mistreating their subjects also led to Cortes getting allies, that is mostly a misconception, it's got more to do with the hands off nature of Mesoamerican political systems encouraging opportunistic side switching, ironically sort of the opposite of them being oppressive or anything. See pastebin.com/h18M28BR and also the links in https://arch.b4k.co/v/thread/640670498/#640679139 for more info

Chinese Battle Furries
>This morning I was going through the Imperial City when I saw a Chinaman dressed in a garment that looked like a tiger-skin, and thereby hangs a tale—a tail, by the way, hung from the garment. The fellow was sufficiently interesting for me to inquire about, and I found he was one the Imperial Army. He belonged to the Tiger Brigade. Now don’t laugh and I’ll tell you about it.
>It seems that the Chinese have an idea that noise is a frightful thing. You really wouldn’t think that this was true if you were in Peking a moment and listened to the din, or spent a minute or two watching the progress of a conversation between two Chinamen, or, particularly, two Chinese women. But it is a fact. And if noise can be associated with an object of which the ordinary man is afraid, so much the better. The ordinary man, of course, is afraid of a tiger, so what could be better than brigade of tigers to strike terror to the hearts of your enemies. Now tigers are plentiful in this benighted country, but they are not so easily caught nor are they easily trained, so handling as many as a thousand of them would be exceedingly interesting, if not dangerous. Real tigers are really not necessary. If you can make your enemy believe you have thousand trained tigers coming to devour him, that is just as good as if you had the tigers, and that is the secret of the Tiger Brigade.

>The Chinese have not a thousand, but several thousand, of these tiger soldiers. They make uniforms for them of bright yellow cloth and on this they paint the black stripes in imitation of the tiger’s skin. They sew on a striped tail and the tiger soldier is ready to go forth to battle. In war times the brigade is put right to the front of the army. When the army gets near to the enemy—near enough to see plainly—the tiger soldiers drop on their hands and knees and begin to roar as loudly as their lungs will let them. If the imagination of the enemy is good and strong, like that of a Journal reporter, he immediately sees several thousand ferocious tigers advancing upon him to devour him and he runs as if Old Nick himself were after him. Now what do you think of that for an idea in the year of our Lord 1900? It is not much wonder, is it, that anybody who wants to can step in and whip China, or that she is almost powerless to resist any attack that can be made on her. Yet there are people living who talk about the “the yellow peril” and the invasion and over-running of Europe by it—the peril being the Chinese who use Tiger Brigades! The longer we live the more we learn.

your criteria for what constitutes an "authentic" depiction (and you even go as far as admitting much of it takes intentional liberties, like the left side depictions don't) are highly subjective, the sources are all over the place and most of them completely devoid of authority on the matter, and it's clear as day you're trying to glorify this civilization, whereas the left side does the exact opposite. If your collage is to be used for anything more than a merely aesthetic manifest of dissent from contemporary depictions of mesoamerica, its value is almost null.
At least Amazon's show has one historical consultant and one historical advisor (per imdb page), I doubt the chinese cartoons you've chosen to paint your side even have that.

thank you.
when I was younger I took the khan academy courses about their art and spirituality. was okay but never fell for it as I was put off by the human sacrifices. (I remember reading about all the mummies from the mountains etc.)
I do love their military history against the Europeans and such tho.

just give me whatever you recommend desu.

Okay, here:

pastebin.com/p42q14Ff

This has some notable prior dumps I've done, and links to an art drive, a book mega drive, and a reddit post by somebody I collab with which has it's own set of resources, notably an Askhistorians post directory (IMO binging that list of askhistorians posts and more recent ones on AH is a good place to start, as is the "cultural tapestry of mesoamerica" pdf on google as an intro overview, tho other publications by the same source are sketchy)

However, the Art Drive has not been updated in many years, and the mega is currently down, but I've temporally reuploaded the last backup of it I have here, excluding some of the documentaries/videos:

easyupload.io/zm1kme
easyupload.io/p6plas
easyupload.io/628van

The pastebin itself is also outdated, both in that it contains some dumps of mine which have misinfo and/or I've since learned more about, and in that it lacks a lot of newer dumps, such as a dump I did on Mesoamerican polearms (desuarchive.org/his/thread/9543560/#9555797), other weapons (desuarchive.org/his/thread/15070724#p15071106) a conquest related one(desuarchive.org/his/thread/9543560/#9549778 ); one with various excerpts of Aztec cities, markets, palaces, etc (arch.b4k.co/v/thread/533899049/#533929352) and my Mesoamerican media recommendations (desuarchive.org/co/thread/119651972/#119695404 + Onyx equinox, which was the subject of the thread; another friend of mine did this even more comprehensive list which also includes artists, youtube videos, etc: x.com/Majora__Z/status/1779068465631904240).

So if you are wanting images, info, etc not contained in any of these (or have questions about images in the drive, esp. as not everything is labeled or 100% accurate) there's a good chance I may still have stuff, you just need to ask. My throwaway email is in the pastebin, though, as with everything else, I am years behind replying to stuff there.

Pic related is also a WIP reading chart we're working on
