Anyone also noticed since being in the fragrance game and the nose learned to smell more nuances that your own fart smell more interesting? Since i'm taking more supplements my fart sometimes smell metallic, animalic, somewhat musky-powdery. I'm addicted to my own fart to the point when everytime i fart i turn around to sniff it.

I don't know, but the bottle is pretty sweet. I have no experience with this brand whatsoever. This particular fragrance has three reviews on fragrantica. All of them are positive, but it seems strangely under the radar considering it's a $300+ fragrance from the personal brand of a perfumer that has made a metric fuckton of fragrances for various brands over the course of a 50 year career. A lot of the big league brief-chasers seem to have these rinky-dink brands that nobody really talks about. Makes me wonder what kind of Faustian lengths Kurkdjian had to go to to make eau d'Entist the most successful creator-owned fragrance of all time

Wow. I like this one a lot. I don't understand why people complain about the marine note, that's the best part. It's not some cheap smelling aquozone nonsense, it's a decently convincing sea salt accord. The vanilla is very light and blends with the citrus to create a creamy liqueur effect. It's like sipping Limoncello on the beach at an upscale Italian resort while a cool ocean breeze is coming through. It's soft, but it's a hot weather fragrance. Smells like money. Very bougie, white linens and pressed slacks kind of fragrance. This is how I picture Jude Law's character in The Talented Mr. Ripley smelling.

I want you to give me your honest opinions on the following brands:

>Chopard
>Nicolai
>Aaron Terence Hughes
>Initio
>Amouage
>Parfums de Marly
>Aramis
>Serge Lutens
>Tauer Perfumes
>Guerlain
>Matiere Premiere
>>
>>18119744
One of these is not really like the others
>>
>>18119744
Tauer is absolute top tier perfumery
Serge Lutens is "masstige" according to retards ITT but it regularly puts out high quality scents, probably one of the best price/quality ratios out there if you compare the brand to its competitors. Malle also has similar quality but is overpriced; Diptyque as well but scents often lack performance
PDM is good but has embarrassing marketing and is wildly overpriced. The scents themselves are just more refined takes on popular scent DNAs but they are not worth the money and the brand rarely creates anything really interesting
Guerlain and Nicolai are top tier although I prefer other houses I have to acknowledge they consistently create extremely high quality scents
Amouage has some interesting stuff, Initio too. Unjustly shat on by /frag/ even though they rarely create masterpieces they're still very decent
Matieres Premieres is excellent
>>
>>18119673

>>

>Are the Zara ones any good?
No, not really. Go on Fragrancenet or Fragrancex and get him something with a higher MSRP for <$100. Floris Santal will work. It's a bit like an upscale La Nuit de L'Homme. Very hard to dislike and you can tell him about the fancy 300 year history of the house.
>>

>Nicolai
Excellent house with a few misses here and there. NYI alone would be enough to make me give this house a free pass
>Aaron Terence Hughes
He's getting better over the years. The early releases were meme status. Like I said, he's getting better, but I still find most of his releases to be too aggressive to be wearable in most scenarios.
>Initio
PDM with more oud
>Amouage
The ubiquity of this house within fragcom supports the premise that most of these people are so into fragrance that they can't actually smell most releases anymore. I don't think their releases smell "bad" per se, but if you are an Amouage fan, I implore you to set aside a month where you don't spray anything. 30 days, no perfume. After this period, go back through your collection and reassess all those fragrances you thought smelled weak. What you will find is that you had simply fried your olfactory sensors and were probably the most obnoxious person in the room to most people.
>Parfums de Marly
Creed for brown people. Sedley and Habdan smell very nice though
>Aramis
Dated but still great. In fact, dated in this case should be worn as a badge of honor
>Serge Lutens
I adore them. They are a fragrance line for fashionable goths. The kind that don't really exist anymore. And don't listen to the hype, Chergui still smells great.
>Guerlain
Their new releases can be safely ignored most of the time, but the classics are still being imitated a hundred years later for a reason

At around the start of the pandemic, I blind bought Herod because I found a deal on one of the gray market sites that was so insane I couldn't pass it up. Bottle gets there and I smell it. It smells nice, but of course like with pretty much all PDMs, the hype is over the top. Performance was great and I'd say it was definitely worth what I paid (little over $100 for the 120 ml. It was less than what the basic bitch Sauvage edt goes for nowadays), so I wasn't disappointed, but I have better tobacco fragrances so I left it at the apartment when I went back home to visit family.

Because it was coof and I had been living in NYC, I figured I'd just stay home for a while and ride it out because I was afraid they'd eventually go crazy and shut the bridges and airport down or something retarded like that (which they almost did. They shut the airports down for about a week). When I came back I picked up the Herod bottle and noticed it seemed weirdly light. Got out the flashlight to check the juice and two thirds of the bottle was missing. My roommate was obviously wearing it while I was gone. I wasn't mad so I didn't want to confront him directly about it, but I kept dropping hints to see if he would mention liking tobacco scents or something. I would have gladly given it to him. When I ended up moving out I even asked if he wanted to take a couple fragrances from my collection hoping he'd take it but he refused.

I don't get it. If he went through two thirds of a 120 ml bottle in six months he must have really liked it. It's still just sitting on my shelf going unused to this day. It's a really expensive fragrance. I'd rather it belong to someone who would enjoy wearing it instead of having it just sit on my shelf like a museum piece. Feels like such a waste. I'm still kind of bummed out about it. I should have just left it there when I moved so he didn't have to feel embarrassed by asking for it or whatever the problem was.

I've never heard anyone in the general use this term (either in the incorrect and passive aggressive way fragcom often misuses the term, nor the actual definition) to describe Serge Lutens. And if they did, it wouldn't really work in either capacity. The term "masstige" refers to when prestige brands of any category releases something affordable to the average person. This would refer to something like the BMW 2 series. It's a BMW that costs about the same as a high trim Camry. Serge Lutens can't really be considered "masstige" by this definition because, while it is definitely respected in fragcom and they make good fragrances, it's not really expensive enough to be considered a prestige brand.

When people in fragcom use the term "masstige", a lot of them seem to mean expensive and mass-appealing. The astute amongst you might notice that this definition is really fucking stupid, because we already we already have a term that means expensive and mass appealing. That term is "expensive and mass appealing". No one is confused when you say this. They are not using this term for the sake of clarity, they just use it as a bitchy way to shit on brands they don't like. The only people who use the term like this are huge faggots. No one in history has ever uttered the term "masstige" in this way without literally taking a dick out of their mouth first. And as soon as the last syllable has left their lips, the dick goes right back in immediately. This is a well studied phenomenon.

That being said, Serge Lutens can't be considered "masstige" by this definition either because they aren't mass appealing. They're one of the nichiest niche houses.
>>
>>18121201
I think being snobbish is good, actually
>>
>>18120875
Isn't it in the masstige category on that retarded chart? You know the one
>>18121201
>expensive and mass-appealing
It's a spectrum anyway. Some frags from very respectable houses are expensive yet appeal to a wide audience (e.g. Invasion Barbare), others are also expensive and slightly less inoffensive while still being easy to like for most (e.g. Baraonda), others yet are both expensive and challenging (e.g. Tauer L'Oudh)
>it's not really expensive enough to be considered a prestige brand
Do you think that really plays much of a role?
Nicolai and most of Tauer's frags aren't very expensive either, what makes them "just niche" as opposed to prestige brands? What would you say qualifies as a prestige brand? I think in the eyes of most, the fact that their frags are not as expensive as some other brands like Malle has no bearing on how prestigious they're perceived to be
>they aren't mass appealing
They're very interesting and complex but generally not extremely challenging save for a few exceptions. Something like Chergui or Santal Majuscule is fairly easy to like imo. When you say "nichiest niche", brands like Prin or Ensar Oud come to mind.
Maybe my nose has reached a point of no return though since I'm starting to appreciate ouds more and more

>>
>>
>>18121219
>Do you think that really plays much of a role?
I generally think so, but all of these terms are kind of bullshit and don't really matter. To me a "prestige" brand is something a person would wear as a flex. It's the sort of brand a person doesn't necessarily buy simply because they like it, but because it's a status symbol.

Nicolai is respected within fragcom, and the "prestige" associated with that brand comes from the fact that the fragrances are really good, not necessarily because they're expensive. I think if you have to explain to a person why a brand is considered a prestige brand, it probably isn't one.

I think these sorts of terms are less esoteric outside of fragrance. In fact, fragrance is one of those rare things that consistently proves the emperor wears no clothes and that all of our ideas about the innate quality of prestige products is bullshit because fragrance is invisible. You can spray a thousand dollar Roja fragrance, a $500 Creed Fragrance, a $90 YSL fragrance and a $15 Armaf fragrance and have people sniff them blindly and get all kinds of varying answers on which one is the best. You can't really do that with a Lamborghini or a Rollex or any other product where the label is right there for the world to see.

Usually with prestige goods, there is definitely an undeniable difference in quality, but that's not really the case with fragrance. For the most part, all these brands use the same oil houses and the same revolving door list of perfumers. The only real difference is in the packaging. Is a Spirit of Dubai fragrance of higher quality or more creative than a Nicolai fragrance? Hell no. But it doesn't matter because perfume is all a big grift

What is your go-to rose-centric scent? I'm currently between Diptyque's L'Ombre Dans L'Eau and Tiziana Terenzi's Ecstasy. The former is a very green scent, not unlike if you were to extend the opening of Green Irish Tweed, with a soapy rose in the background. For reference, the dragon lord of Basenotes described it as an inversion of the Perfumer's Workshop's Tea Rose, which seems about right to me. Ecstasy smells to me like the rose and incense from Portrait of a Lady with a prominent coniferous woody note and is one of the few scents to have induced abstract synesthesia in me, which I take as a mark of quality.

I'm just starting out with wearing fragrances. On the phase where I discover what I like. I own BDC Parfum, PDM Herod and TF Cherry Smoke and FM Portrait of a Lady. Looking for some summer freshies. Thinking about PDM Greenly or Creed Aventus or something else by Creed, are these OK for summer freshies? any other recommendations? Kind of into niche fragrances more than designer.
>>
>>18123536
You're going to be shat on so hard by tryhards for this post assuming it's not bait.
>summer freshies
Don't blind buy shit that costs 400 a bottle, unless you can afford it I guess. Creed has Virgin Island Water, Silver Mountain Water and Millesime Imperial which are less overdone than Aventus. PDM has Percival but frankly just get Zara Absolutely Dark if you like that scent profile, or maybe Chanel Platinum Egoiste.
Without knowing what notes you like, it's hard to make recommendations

>>18123572
That's fine. I think those are great, love the smell. Herod is a classic masterpiece, doubt anyone would hate on it. Cherry Smoke is not the first choice when it comes to cherry fragrances, so it's not that popular to be hated too much. Doubt Portrait of a lady is hated, it's a great fragrance. BDC is hated, of course, but parfum is brilliant Chanel fragrance, don't care.

As for freshies, I don't blind buy, I have samples - from PDM tried all fresh stuff, liked Greenly the most. I have Creed Aventus sample as well, but it might be too generic at this point with so many clones around. Will try the other ones, haven't yet. In regards to notes, I like fruity, a bit sweet and fresh with a lot of natural ingredients preferably. Looking for a somewhat dumb reach freshie so I can just apply it and go for the sugpahmmer.

got samples of the most popular male leaning frags from zoologist as my first dip into niche scents
was promised some challenging and uncomprimising scents, but they really aren't
they just are all heinously artificial smelling
the first thing you get is a fat whiff of chemicals
ok you want to depict the habitat of the animal and not the animal itself and you want to be vegan, cool
then why the fuck are you adding synthetic animal notes into all of your perfumes you fucking retards
>>
>>18124523
Zoologist strikes me as a meme house, similar to Orto Parisi or Imaginary Authors
Just weird and quirky for the sake of it
>>
>>18124523
>>18124634
Zoologist is literally Canadian ELDO with better branding but less experimental fragrances (whether you consider that a good thing or not).

I’m curious what fragrances specifically you’re talking about because yes, some are pretty terrible, there are quite a few where they use some really weird, artificially sweet scent that ruins the whole thing, Bee is the worst, but they have several very good ones as well.

I really enjoyed T-Rex and Penguin, Koala and Musk Deer are good as well, Camel is extremely similar to Spice Must Flow from ELDO. Macaque (Fuji Apple) is a good freshie, Cow is a lovely creamy scent, and if you’re into gourmands Rabbit and Harvest Mouse are both delicious.

Just to give you further reference, Cockatiel and Dodo both smell fucking horrid, without that artificial sweet note. Snowy Owl and Tiger also both have this… weird… stale air artificial scent. There are others that are bad (to me) those are just a few.
>>
>>18124957
I got hyrax, bee and tiger

wearing bortnikoff vesna. I must say bortnikoff is really growing on me, after the initial suprise that he doesn't mean crazy challenging perfumes like russian adam or similar, he's an ingredient nerd who went to thailand to make essentially oldschool fine french perfume with top tier ingredients. Lovely stuff
>>
>>18125157
Yeahhhh… all 3 of those are pretty fucking awful.

If you want masculine and challenging but still good, get T-Rex. Get Harvest Mouse for a much more enjoyable sweet gourmand and no synthetic sweet smell like in Bee. If you want another challenging masculine you could grab Bat or Rhinoceros, but personally I don’t care for their scent. They’re not “bad” like Tiger, just not smells I like. Beaver is pleasant and more wearable as well.
