I'm going to be honest. I care DEEPLY about social media engagement when it comes to my art. As far as I'm concerned, if my work doesn't get enough likes, it's bad art.
Yes, I draw for clout
Yes, I draw for followers
Yes, I draw for approval and validation
Why the fuck else would I even bother posting anything online?
>>
>>7155343
All these social media threads made me realize how utterly pointless it is. I'm looking forward to the day I can delete my accounts and link people to my website instead

99% of the time someone goes on about hating social media and it not mattering is because their stuff is shit and got like 2 reddit upboats

I'm going to be honest. I care NOTHING about social media engagement when it comes to my art. As far as I'm concerned, if my work gets enough likes, it's bad art. slop for the masses

Yes, I draw for growth

The only metric I care about is the kind of booru my shit ends up in.
Any rando can drop a like when scrolling but if you end up on the kind of booru that isn't so full of weebs they'll ban whitey's art on sight it means
>one guy liked your art enough to take five minutes to look for a higher quality version, get off Twitter/IG, log in to his virtual gooncave and post it there
>or at least write your handle in his bot's list
>their jannies thought it was good enough to stay up
>I don't know how many reports it takes to get pics removed from those places but fewer than this many people thought your art was so shit it had no place on their virtual holy altar of japanese pornographic cartoons
>>

>if my work doesn't get enough likes, it's bad art.
Plenty of pro tier artworks getting less than 10 likes on Instagram and we all know that the algorithm is pay to win.
>Either you pay for ads or you're buried.

You'd still care about numbers, they would just have a different name.

I draw for my own self-satisfaction, rather than anything deep like 'communication'. I don't see it as being any better or worse than your reasoning honestly, it's not noble or anything.
>>
>>7155343
i just want to make friends honestly. i’d rather have 5 followers who all draw as well and talk to me about my ocs (while having interesting ocs of their own) than 1 million followers who i don’t even know. that’s my motivation for art personally, to communicate in ways i can’t with words or to otherwise supplement my lack of charisma. i don’t mean to imply i have some deep shit inside of me either, i just want to draw traps in artsy ways

for what though? how is that a real issue vs chasing clout/likes?

i'm relatively new to /ic/ (been around for less than a year). has the board always had constant threads about social media success or is this a recent uptick? if it's the latter it might reflect how enshittified the algorithms have become because why else would everyone start collectively bitching about "muh validation and big artist retweets"?
>>

>has the board always had constant threads about social media success or is this a recent uptick?
constant for the last decade. before that it was how to be a concept artist in the game industry

I drew booba and reddit shadow banned me. Fuck.

We need to go back. The video game industry is shit, but at least there's a clear answer; draw well.

that's a nice cat so I will give you this advice:
treat the social media aspect of your art like a game. Yeah it's important too. Maybe very important. But the art is the most important thing.
>>
>>7156510
The ratio of nodraw/social media threads has definitely gone up in the last 2-3 years. I suspect it's just a few retards shitting up the board.
>>

I don't give a fuck about numbers, they mean nothing to me. I do, however, care to have a space to collect and display my work for people to see.
This thing where people care about engagement rates and follower count is a recent development. It used to be just sharing your stuff with like-minded people. I despise how hollow social media interactions are. I don't care if a piece I post gets ten thousand likes, it changes nothing about how I personally evaluate it. I know exactly what content does well, but I simply don't care to draw them. What's the point of drawing meaningless pin-ups, when you can use your talent to tell stories, to make comics, animation and video games, to create something that's entertaining beyond activating some zombie's neurons for half a second before they scroll past it. I would rather create something of value and reserve my social capacities for people who actually matter to me.
>>
>>7156652
the problem is is that youd have to play the social media game to some extent to get in with "like-minded" people. in some ways 4chan is the best social media as there is no "game" to play and youre already in a circle where its a pretense that there is no game to play, but getting a deeper connection on a site like this is just... kinda weird with all the schizos. compare it to having a big twitter, i had about a genuine interaction at a ratio of 1:100 followers. so im just at a weird limbo searching for frens in shitholes like this.
>>
why do people keep bumping these threads
>>
>>7156731
not like anyone draws on this board anyways. but everyone has an opinion on art adjacent topics like this so its fun to discuss topics you cant talk much anywhere else in other circles.

I draw

I only draw stuff that’s relatively niche, like, characters who barely get any fanart. That way, even if I don’t get huge numbers on my art, I know there’ll be some autists out there who’ll find it and appreciate it.

When people talk about these numbers, they are usually referring to the numbers of people seeing their work.
