Is there a "recommended practice list" to go along with each chapter of the vilppu book? Something like
>Read and copy chapter 1 X amount of times over an X day/week period
>Watch the video for chapter 1 X amount of times
>Do X gesture drawings (or chapter specific practice) per day for X days
>Do X finished pieces focusing on the gesture (or whatever the chapter is focusing on) of the figure

yes you are correct, there are many small compounding errors that are adding up to more than the sum of their parts in the final image
it's entirely too difficult and absolutely pointless to try and fix it now, you've probably already looked at it too much and it's beginning to embed itself as a pattern in your brain, you'll just correct one thing to notice that it threw 3 other things out of whack which might look good to you at the time but still be wrong, move on, there's nothing more to learn, if you want to learn, redraw it, if you absolutely must fix this particular drawing, don't look at or think about it for a week or more and then try again with fresh eyes

You need to double-check the vertical axis of her head. Currently, the philtrum is not properly aligned with the columella, which in turn causes the mouth to appear slightly off-center in relation to the nose.

Also, there's a subtle discrepancy between the angles conveyed by both facial features, with the mouth seeming relatively closer to what it would look like in a frontal view.

After an hour of looking at various references and constant re draws this is the final product, I'm both proud and embarrassed, it's my most ambitious drawing yet, tried so hard and got out of my comfort zone more but the end result is sloppy in certain areas, what you anons think?
>>
>>7144574
No. Primarily because if you suck, the trace is obvious as such and probably looks worse than what you can draw freehand. To trace a 3D model in such a way that it looks good, you need the skill to make a character drawing look good in the first place. I remember reading Rosario Vampire way back and immediately noticed that is was traced 3D, but as time went on and the series concluded in vol 14 of S2, it was impossible to tell if it still used 3D for posing (which it did)
It is a time saving tool first and foremost.

Give the guy some forearms and put some of those fingers together. Remember the index usually likes to stand out a bit and/or keep some distance from the other 3.
Since he's grabbing onto something, the thumb would wrap around the object, not stick out like it is doing in the pic.
Seek references or try a similar pose yourself, see how your arms and hands behave.

I’m not really sure how to narrow it down. I think the shoulders are anatomically wrong somehow, and the arms another problem. The head (to me) lacks 3d depth and the perspective doesn’t feel quite right, but I’m not sure I have the skills to fix that or If it’s even a real problem to begin with
>>7144633

Besides that if you practice constructing a hand enough you’ll get it, but you really have to do hand practice separate from the body you have to give yourself room to draw it and really understand it. Trying to slap hands on a figure in your notebook will undoubtedly lead to bad hands. So practice these anon just a page of shapely hands a week, and you’ll have them in no time.

I honestly don't know what the hell I am doing, looks quite deformed but I assume it's a mileage thing that I just have to keep working on. How do I take measures like Right Side and Keys told me if it's on a screen with a pen tablet instead of a physical canvas that always stays the same size?

Plz tell me what the fuck kind of brush you used to get those beautiful tapered triangle like lines? I'm particularly wondering about the line I've circled below her left ear (although the lines on her eyelashes and hair also blow me away); did you erase the part that tapers off at the bottom or was this all from one stroke??? I can never get a line to come out looking like that even though my pen tablet is pressure sensitive!

I'm being extra nitpicky, but the cut of her bangs is slanted towards the left, and the comparatively thicker upper lashes of the furthermost eye make it appear just a tiny bit taller than the foreground one.

Also, I think that her face would look slightly better if the eye on the right were placed just a couple of pixels lower, so thay its alignment with the left one becomes "truly" horizontal.

Lastly, the highlights on both eyes are placed at different levels.

~.~ I lost some of my old images cause my comp died but luckily I checked warosu and someone had reposted it on another thread, here's the settings for the custom brush I made a while back on sai 2.

For the taper effect I set my pen settings to max hard and made my pen size to max letting pressure determine how thick the lines would be. Sensitivity size is also 0 and at high hardness so a light touch should be able to give you a faded pixel even at large canvas/brush sizes

Thank you anon, I like to use as fewer single strokes ever since I saved up for the tablet, in the past I did do the erase think when I had a mouse lol hope this helps you.

Cool ref image. I can't give a good critique because the way you took that photo tweaks the original proportions of your drawing due to the camera angle. So I don't know if her head is too small or her torso is too big, or it's just the angle of the camera giving that impression. But I like the way you did the silhouette, that's good, blocking shapes like that helps with doing much with less.
Keep up the good work anon.

Yes, but visually it can be more complicated. Theres an optical illusion near hard edges where because of the contrast between the light and dark planes, the edge touching the light plane will appear darker than the rest and especially the edge of the same place but next to a darker one. Idk if it makes sense written like this but basically its a contrast thing. It can be stylistically rendered like he did

I see where bert’s coming from but don’t think this will be very helpful without some understanding of form, like all his examples from students of “various skill” have some ingrained knowledge of how a hand is put together, what it’s proportions are, and so drawing it via this method is more constructive to their development as an artist.

Regarding hands, I used to do pose practice with that Posemaniacs hand 3d viewer but I stopped, I need to that again and maybe go for a construction approach too since I often get comments about my hands being worse than the rest. But they are so hard mang I still don't get them fully.

for self-critique, overlay your drawing to your ref; adjusting its size to minimize deviation (but keeping its original width/height ratio)
a common issue when starting out is to place the facial features too high in the face, which you can see in pic related
the features are also too big, which is another common mistake

whatever you want, but remember that you need to keep the consistency in the shit that's all, if you are gonna make shadows keep them logical, dont use blurred brushes if you are not gonna do realism or shit, and if you do then keep them delimited as you do cel-shading with a hard brush, defining the shapes correctly and not randomly.
The most easy to do right know should be taking more time to do correctly the lines, for the painting yeah any way you want, with a solid linework should look ok as long as you don't start inventing things.

Thanks man. tried to some of the poses from memory, not really satisfied with the result (surprisingly I find it harder than doing a pose from imagination) but seems like a fun exercise.

Anon I'm gonna be as clear with you as possible:
I tried doing my own thing first, all that happened was that people kept pestering me to KtD. So I did that and got told that I'm shit at it. So tried doing my own thing again and guess what fucking happened?
So it would be really nice to get some advice that doesn't put me in a fucking loop.

as in the pose is bad and shouldn't be drawn because it's awkward and unnatural. No person/character imaginable would do this in any scenario, it's just "pose reference pack" slop

Critique please. I'm trying to draw an OC I left in my brain for too long. I spent most of my time drawing a different one over and over and I think I should just knuckle down and draw every one of them rather than neglect them to the point their design is lost to me. I still haven't grasped the basics but as long as I can burn through a sketchbook and not feel like it's a total waste of paper I'm satisfied with any progress accumulated.

I can't draw folds, they always look awkward
I read a few books on folds and I sometimes copy from reference
but when I use my imagination (pic related) they always look weird
I don't want to use references all the time

I want to be good enough to be able to draw a short comic or manga

>I shouldn't be struggling with the fucking beginner book now, should I?
/int/ here
that's normal, the beginning is the hardest part, it gets easier from there (until you plateau, and you stop seeing gains and you feel burnt out)
beginners books are super hard in my opinion, there's no way a person without any experience can make perfect copies of these drawings
keep going, you're like a newborn deer, the first steps are always awkward

based. keep it up and keep drawing instead of lamenting over "how?"
>>
I do a little Dodson or Everson or Bridgman hoping to get "better" one day. My accuracy is good but my other fundamentals are lacking and I don't make any art of my own, just copies and lessons.
It's been a year of this.
Now I start to think that my goal is one day to paint.
but I've never tried. I don't even feel I can draw; I'm sure I have to be able to draw first, but I doubt I'll reach a fixed point where I think "Okay, now I know how to draw, time to learn to paint."

>worthlesly spent the last 6 hours on this, when i have work and finals to study for
There it is, that feeling of worthlessness that caused me to stop. I get its been a decade with no practice, and its digital which i've done tried all of 5 times so I shouldn't be upset, but man its like every feeling just rushed back and its somehow fucking worse
>have no confidence in my lines so i chicken scratch everything
>even with reference next to the image, still cant get the proportions right
>I do not understand digital media so the attempts at coloring are even more pathetic
at least mischief is cool, I always hated zooming in and being met with pixels.
>>
>>7146553
You're just expecting way too much of yourself up front. You need to strike a balance and have fun with drawing, be more loose, let yourself fail more. I can tell that you hone in extremely hard and obsess with perfection in mind. I recommend aiming for more sketches rather than focusing on one for hour, you won't get as much mileage tweaking pixel even though it can be addicting. Of course you'll get frustrated if your expectations exceed your skill. Even minor practice benefits you immensely and you already know what work needs to be done just take it one at a time. boob too high but that can be fixed in 2 seconds flat with digital, I like it.
