Ausbros... how the fuck do we fix the housing market in Australia?
>>
>You vill share ze pod

Lol I called it years ago. The future for most developed countries will be poorfag strangers sharing apartments/houses so they have a place to rest their heads when they're not working 12+ hours per day. Instead of ze pods, it might be people sharing beds.

Commit to building new public housing, make it difficult or impossible to privatise. With new public housing, set the lower bound for the market, forcing private sector to become competitive. Then progressively tax income generated from rent so owning multiple rental properties becomes riskier - ideally set the lower bound of the market to lower than the average mortgage payment.

All very easy to do, supposing there's any political will to do so. Unfortunately you'll find that the majority of politicians are landlords, so nothing ever gets done about it.

There are many things that could be done, but 2/3rds of people here own property in some shape or form and none of them are willing to see the value of their “investment” deteriorate. So understandably any policy aimed at deflating overpriced housing or even taking the wind out of its sails somewhat and giving wage earners a chance to catch up would be deeply unpopular. Whichever political party does hold power at the time that this house of cards does topple might not see government for decades, they’d endure generational damage to reputation for “destroying the wealth of Australians”.

I think for now the game for Aussies is - if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. We have a government that is so hell bent on keeping property values inflated that it’s effectively a government backed and insured investment scheme where you’re guaranteed not to lose (remember when COVID happened and they were debating “Homekeeper” where if you couldn’t afford your mortgage payments due to losing a job or industry downturn, the government would aid with your payments and take an equity stake in your house?). If you can afford to get into real estate in any way, you’d be silly not to.

Ultimately I think prosperity for those not already secure with housing is going to dwindle in Aus. Skilled people should be looking abroad for better opportunities, and people in Sydney or Melbourne need to consider upskilling for a different career which will allow them to find gainful employment in a smaller city. We’re about five years behind Canada and the locals are not doing well there.

Why not bunk beds at that point? It is very uncomfortable sharing a bed with another male. I have no idea how gay couples sleep together through the night. Men smell bad, move a lot, sweat, are hairy, and produce much more heat. The few times I had to do it I barely slept, would wake up every other hour.

Hong Kong has skyscrapers of public housing. Australian cities are effectively islands with how distant they are from each other so it shouldn't be too different.
>>58451020
At this point you won't be deteriorating their investment, you would just be slowing down their gains. Boomers are greedy scum though, they would rather die in a 90% Asian country if it means they can leech off of society.

Size is meaningless when most of the land is a desert. Canada is even bigger yet for some reason 90% of their population live on thin strip of land above the US border and they have the worst housing crisis in the western world.
